About this listen

The final audiobook of the Sovereign of the Seven Isles begins in the mountains of Andalia with Alexander—wounded, surrounded and fleeing for his life.

Isabel learns that Phane can use her link with the darkness for his own, terrible ends. And Abigail rallies the Coven to face the Sin'Rath, a threat now magnified a hundred fold. Battle rages across the Seven Isles, and Alexander Reishi stands at the center of it all. As forces converge on the Nether Gate, he departs on a desperate quest to free Isabel, kill Phane and banish the Shades for all time.

Completing the Sovereign of the Seven Isles series has been a deeply rewarding experience. David A. Wells has crafted a fantasy epic that is as much about the philosophy of leadership as it is about magic and warfare.

What truly elevated this 7-book journey was the narration by Derek Perkins. His delivery is wonderful; he brings a consistent, commanding presence to the characters that mirrors the weight of the story itself.

The Writing:
The series left me with several profound takeaways that I’ll be carrying forward. In particular, the depiction of Alexander as a purpose-driven leader was striking. His ability to remain decisive when faced with complex, non-binary choices is a testament to the clarity of his character. The "Code" throughout the books also offers some incredibly practical wisdom:

"Deal in what is, not in what if."

"Be driven by emotion but ruled by reason."

The Performance:
Derek Perkins perfectly captures these nuances. Whether it is the tension of battle or the quiet moments of introspection, his performance ensures that the "teachings" within the dialogue land with the impact they deserve.

Final Reflections:
While the ending was satisfying, it leaves the listener with some intriguing points to ponder. I’m still reflecting on Siduri’s ultimate path and whether Phine’s sacrifice led to a true joining with the other sovereigns in the stone. These lingering ambiguities only add to the depth of the world Wells has built.

Thank you to both David A. Wells for the incredible story and Derek Perkins for the stellar narration. Highly recommended for any fan of epic fantasy.
