Obwohl sich der 32-jährige River McKenzie tief im Herzen nichts sehnlicher als eine ernsthafte Beziehung wünscht, holt er sich seine Befriedigung seit Jahren fast ausschließlich in One-Night-Stands. Da er alleine lebt, kann er tun und lassen, was er will, bis er seinen gleichaltrigen besten Freund Matthew Buck bei sich aufnimmt, dessen langjährige On-off-Freundin Amy ihn mal wieder vor die Tür gesetzt hat. Die beiden Männer verbindet seit Kindergartentagen eine tiefe Freundschaft, die sogar Rivers frühes Coming-out als Teenager schadlos überstanden hatte. Als River merkt, dass er mit der Zeit viel mehr für Matt empfindet, als ihm lieb ist, ist er drauf und dran, ihn schnellstmöglich wieder vor die Tür zu setzen. Doch Weihnachten steht vor der Tür und als Matt ihm auch noch gesteht, dass Amy ihm den Kontakt mit seinem 13-jährigen Sohn Joey verboten hat, bringt er es nicht übers Herz.
