Die "Elegien" entstanden unter dem Eindruck von Goethes Italienreise und wurden inspiriert von der antiken römischen Liebeselegie (Catull, Tibull, Properz und Ovid). Zugleich verarbeitete Goethe in seinen Gedichten die frisch aufkeimende Liebe zu Christiane Vulpius.
Die "Römischen Elegien" (1788/90) sind ein Zyklus aus 20 Gedichten von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Einzelne Gedichte aus diesem Zyklus erschienen in Friedrich Schillers Monatsschrift "Die Horen" und lösten wegen ihrer erotischen Freizügigkeit bei den Zeitgenossen einen Skandal aus. Die anstößigsten Gedichte aus diesem Zyklus hielt Goethe zeitlebens zurück.
