Rosco McGlashan OAM is one of Australia's most accomplished drag racers, land speed racers, and motorsport innovators. Born in Western Australia, McGlashan built his reputation through Pro Stock drag racing, jet dragsters, rocket-powered vehicles, quarter-mile competition, and his relentless pursuit of the World Land Speed Record. McGlashan's motorsport career began in Pro Stock drag racing, where his natural talent quickly became evident when he recorded a faster quarter-mile pass than the professional driver he replaced. This launched a lifelong involvement in Australian drag racing, NHRA-style competition, dragster development, and high-horsepower racing technology. Among his most famous drag racing machines was the legendary Krazy Horse V8 drag bike, originally powered by a Ford V8 engine. The motorcycle was later upgraded to a Pro Stock V8 Chevy, delivering spectacular performance, running the quarter mile in 9.1 seconds at 170 mph in the early 1970s, making it one of the most remarkable machines in Australian motorsport history. Never content with conventional motorsport, McGlashan expanded into rocket-powered racing, building a hydrogen peroxide rocket motorcycle and later driving a rocket-powered go-kart to 253 mph (407 km/h), a speed still recognised as an extraordinary achievement in drag racing and acceleration history. His greatest fame came through the three Aussie Invader cars, a series of jet-powered and rocket-powered land speed record cars designed to challenge the fastest speeds ever achieved on land. Driving Aussie Invader 2, powered by a Mirage fighter jet engine producing approximately 36,000 horsepower, McGlashan set the official Australian Land Speed Record of 500 mph (802.6 km/h) at Lake Gairdner, South Australia, in 1994. He later crashed Aussie Invader 2 at 600 mph when trying to beat Richard Noble's world land speed record. Widely known as "The Fastest Aussie on Earth", McGlashan continued pursuing ever-higher speeds through Aussie Invader 3 (638 mph 1,027 km/h) and the current Aussie Invader 5R, a purpose-built rocket car designed to exceed 1,000 mph (1,600 km/h). The project combines advanced aerodynamics, rocket propulsion, engineering innovation, land speed racing technology and elite motorsport expertise. Today, Rosco McGlashan remains a symbol of Australian determination, drag racing excellence, motorsport engineering, Top Fuel-style performance, speed-record innovation, and high-performance vehicle development. His career spans Pro Stock drag racing, V8 drag bikes, jet dragsters and quarter-mile rocket vehicles. He also competed in land speed record attempts, pushing cutting-edge motorsport technology and making him one of the most influential figures in Australian motorsport history.©2023 Mark J Read (P)2023 Mark J Read Motor Sports Sports
