Publisher's Summary

Was Savarkar really a co-conspirator in the Gandhi murder? Was there a pogrom against a particular community after Gandhi's assassination?

Decades after his death, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar continues to uniquely influence India's political scenario. An optimistic advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity in his treatise on the 1857 War of Independence, what was it that transformed him into a proponent of "Hindutva"? A former president of the All-India Hindu Mahasabha, Savarkar was a severe critic of the Congress's appeasement politics. After Gandhi's murder, Savarkar was charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination. While he was acquitted by the court, Savarkar is still alleged to have played a role in Gandhi's assassination, a topic that is often discussed and debated.

In this concluding volume of the Savarkar series, exploring a vast range of original archival documents from across India and outside it, in English and several Indian languages, historian Vikram Sampath brings to light the life and works of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, one of the most contentious political thinkers and leaders of the twentieth century.

Deeply researched book marred by poor narration

A very good book in English that Veer Savarkar deserved for so long.
Mr Sampath has brought forward minutes details of Veer Savarkar's life.

However this audio book's narration is really poor. The narrator's pronounciation of Marathi or Sanskritized words is nothing short of horrible.
Not a single Marathi surname, village/town name has been pronounced correctly. Even the protagonist hasn't been spared. A prefix to Satarkar's name Swatantrya Veer is pronounced as स्वतंत्र्यवीर instead of स्वातंत्र्यवीर. हेडगेवार is pronounced as हेडगेवर, खापर्डे as खपार्डे, माखजन as मखजन.. so on and so forth.

As a marathi person myself, it is deeply agonizing to listen to the tarnished words of my mother tongue. The narrator should have done some homework.

Didn't expect this from Audible. They should haved done proper supervision. Please choose the narrator who knows the nuances of language and does the homework properly.
Audible should rectify these grave errors which are present throughout the book.

I would have given 5 stars to this Audio book, of not for the terrible narration.

Must read/listen

This great and expertly written book not only is a biography of Savarkar, but also paints a vivid picture of the whole India in those times. We all must read this book to understand the actual history of India, the political and social situation back then and understand the legacy of Savarkar properly

Enlightening!

Very detailed research and meticulous references combined with intricate storytelling. Great way to bring forth history of the country and a great man that has been supressed deliberately.
