Das Spielen von Schachpartien, erst das Nachspielen von 150 klassischen Partien, dann das Spielen gegen sich selbst, rettet den Gestapo-Häftling Dr. B. vor dem Wahnsinn. Allerdings führt ihn die Persönlichkeitsspaltung, der er unterliegt, indem er gegen sich selbst spielt, in eine andere Art von Überreizung und schließlich zu einem Zusammenbruch. Dr. B., an dem die Gestapo offensichtlich das Interesse verloren hat, darf nach seiner Genesung nach Amerika ausreisen und trifft auf dem Schiff auf den Schachweltmeister Czentovic. Es kommt zu einer denkwürdigen Partie, die Dr. B. für sich entscheidet. Die Revanche bringt ihn allerdings wieder seiner alten Überreizung nahe.
