Cronin gives Chaz a thoughtful and intelligent voice, and his gradual realizations about strange inconsistencies - including his missing memories and the loss of an antenna that transmits data from Earth - are often gasp-inducing. As Chaz finds himself more and more isolated, he realizes that the only mission that should matter to him is survival.
