Shusako Endo's Silence tells the story of a Portuguese priest who goes to Japan to investigate the apparent apostasy of his mentor. The novel presents the challenges and the trials faced by this priest in the Japanese lands which wasn't very welcoming to the Christians. Eventually the priest is torn between the ideals that he is expected to live up to as a good Christian vs serving the Evangelical mission. And through all this he keeps questioning the deafening silence of his Lord, trying to make sense of it.

The narrator David Holt has done a wonderful job of bringing out the poignant tone of the book.
