Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) nacque in Scozia e studiò medicina all'Università di Edimburgo. Dopo gli studi, lavorò come chirurgo su varie navi mentre durante la seconda guerra boera, prestò servizio come medico dell'esercito in Sudafrica. Di ritorno nel Regno Unito, aprì un suo studio e iniziò a scrivere libri sul crimine. È noto soprattutto per le avvincenti storie sulle avventure di Sherlock Holmes. Pubblicò quattro romanzi e oltre 50 racconti con il detective e il dottor Watson, che svolgono un ruolo importante nella storia della narrativa poliziesca. Oltre alla serie dedicata a Sherlock Holmes, Doyle scrisse una trentina di libri, in generi come fantascienza, fantasy, romanzi storici, ma anche poesie, opere teatrali e saggistica.
