“Solis is an urgently needed antidote to the fear, fascism, and destruction that defines so much of the present world. . . . a rich, beautiful, and evocative queer love [story].”—Chase Strangio, ACLU Lawyer and Transgender Rights Activist
“Resistance and a fight for freedom in the face of unspeakable horrors . . . A gripping concept.”—Kirkus Reviews
In 2033, the world is desperate for water.
Determined to win the global water race, the New American Republic devises a plan to use the recently discovered aqualinium to make rain, ending the devastating droughts that were brought on by the worst of climate change. All they need are people to dig for it.
People like seventeen-year-old Rania and the thousands of other undocumented immigrants who have been rounded up by the Deportation Force and bused to a labor camp in the desert. Here, enduring brutal circumstances—little food and under the constant threat of death—they mine for the mineral that could potentially save the world and restore the xenophobic government to its status as a superpower. But solidifying this power will come at a cost for the prisoners, whose bodies are slowly being destroyed as they breathe in the sulfuric fumes of the mines. Those too sick to dig are subjected to cruel experiments as scientists try to perfect the formula to create rain.
When Rania has lost all she can stand to lose, she and other prisoners revolt, joining the resistance group SOLIS, which is working from outside the camp to free them. But in order for SOLIS’s plan to work, sacrifice will be required. Not only from Rania, but from Jess, a former DF officer, now also a prisoner; and from Vali, a SOLIS soldier who’s on a mission to liberate both the camp and her mother, but whose taste for vengeance may turn her into the monster she despises.
Told by four narrators, Solis is a riveting tale of courage, sacrifice, and the hope it takes to fight for freedom.

“A riveting adventure and a warning . . . a compelling story of a possible future, but one with echoes of past fascist governments. A story of courage and hope but also one of vengeance and loss, raising the question of whether you can defeat the enemy without becoming a monster yourself.”—All Done Monkey
“Solis is an urgently needed antidote to the fear, fascism, and destruction that defines so much of the present world. At the core of this staggeringly beautiful story is a singularly rich, beautiful, and evocative queer love that reminds us that getting to live and dream as our full selves is the ultimate gift. Through Rania and Kenna, Paola and Abby have allowed queer love to breathe and transform—defying narrative and societal constraints, Solis finally lets queer readers see themselves fully on the page.”—Chase Strangio, ACLU Lawyer and Transgender Rights Activist
“A tight pace and distinct voices bring dynamic energy to this harrowing dystopia, which is perhaps most terrifying in its similarity to our current environmental and political landscape . . . Each character has their own unique traumas, underscoring the very many ways the world is falling apart and the very few possibilities there seem to be for humanity to survive. Readers of Mendoza’s Sanctuary will recognize some key elements, but no knowledge of the previous book is needed to understand the overwhelming odds these teens—and the world—are facing.”—BCCB
“Set in an alarmingly near future, Mendoza's sequel to her novel Sanctuary describes a nightmarish United States in which all immigrants, regardless of current status, are categorized as illegal . . . The plot is tautly written and the pace increases rapidly toward the climax.”—Booklist
“Resistance and a fight for freedom in the face of unspeakable horrors…the characters are three-dimensional, and their deep connection and care for one another are highlights of the story. A gripping concept.”—Kirkus Reviews
