The story of class differences (the relationship between a woman of middle-class family and a miner) in the tough world of coal mining, it brought a refreshing realism to literature. D. H. Lawrence’s domestic dirge follows the mismatched marriage between a middle class woman and a workaday coal miner. Sons and Lovers has been described as one of Lawrence’s more "difficult" works, making actor Paul Slack’s Earphone Award-winning rendition all the more gratifying. In his earthen baritone, Slack exudes the doting devotion of Gertrude Copper - neurotic mother and disaffected wife - and seethes with the stifling confinement of the coal mines, as he strikes a dark and oppressive chord. Slack captures the psychological headiness that pervades this tale of oedipal family tensions, displaced passions, and working-class misery.
