Publisher's Summary
Critic Reviews
"No reader of Sophie's Choice can doubt that Styron has put immense energy into trying to understand and deal justly with the evils in American history and the European Holocaust, to say nothing of the evil (as well as the good) in his characters....Scene after scene comes back now, long after I last read the book, with astonishing vividness - perhaps the most obvious mark of a masterpiece." (John Gardner)

THIS IS ABRIDGED
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
shame on me for not noticing it was abridged before I purchased. I don't understand why they would abridge any book. you miss so much including what the authors intent was for the reader.
there were so beautiful lines in it and it was a powerful story (the small part I heard!)
the narrator had a great voice

Abridged Version
This is a scam. Don't waste your time with it. It doesn't state that it is an abridged version of the book.

Not the full book
This was a abridged version of the book - condensed in to 3 chapters. Very disapointed because I wanted the full book.

so-so
Sound was great, loved the reader. Love anything having to do with the Holocaust, and had always heard what a fantastic novel this was. Perhaps, it would have been better had this been an unabridged version. I could never understand why the protagonist was attracted to this dysfunctional woman. This version failed to help me sympathize with Sophie. It was just so-so

Not the entire book! Abbreviated version.
This should have been made clear in the packaging! Very disappointing. I would never have bought it.

Thought it was unabridged.
The abridgement was stilted and not worthy of styron's greatness. The narrator was excellent however. And the original book is profoundly entertaining and sad and tender. Just the abridgement should never have been approved.

50 Shades of Grey-with Nazis
What would have made Sophie's Choice better?
Zombies. I had always heard about what a great classic this is but I don't get it.
What do you think your next listen will be?
The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald-just to get the icky taste out of my brain.
What does Norman Snow bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His characters are distinct and he conveys the full range of their emotions.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I learned the signs and symptoms of anemia. Great news-I don't have it.
Any additional comments?
I imagine this is what we'd get if Ernest Hemmingway had decided to write the screenplay for a pornographic movie.

Terrible abridgment
This is an interesting if oddly written story, but the abridgement totally ruins it. It is not done at all sensitively and really takes you out of the story.

Sad and funny
What a horrible choice to have to make. Heart rending. It's horrible what people can do to other people for a stupid philosophy.

hacked
I read half of the book and decided it was too tedious so moved on to the audio book. But this is not the original version. It's missing most of the plot.
