Sunday Times Memoir of the Year 2023

It was one of the images of the twentieth century: two boys, walking behind the coffin of their mother, Princess Diana. Billions wondered what the princes must be feeling - and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before then, Prince Harry was known as the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. But grief changed everything.

At twenty-one, he joined the Army but was soon more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn't find true love.

Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple's romance and wedding. But in the face of sustained press intrusion, Harry saw no other way to protect his wife and children than to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try had been his mother. . .

Written with raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is full of insight, revelation and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

I usually don't read nonfiction but being a Prince Harry fan I decided to check it out. Boy am I glad that I did! Though Harry is a royal, his life story is so relatable to many of us. His trauma of losing his mom (the one person who truly loved him), having to grow up as a spare (reading that he was told very early on that one of his role is as an organ donor to the heir really was like a punch in the gut), being used as a scapegoat for other members of his family, making him work for pittance and beyond all these, when he finally met someone who truly loved him, making that person's life living hell, everything has been written so movingly. The story made me shed tears at some parts and equally made me lol at other parts. I'm happy that after having his story told by 1000s of tabloid hacks for 38 years, Harry has finally got the chance to tell his story in his own words. The ghostwriter JR Moehringer deserves a special mention. His words have a lyrical quality to it, beautifully written. Overall, an excellent book telling the story of an amazing man, I absolutely loved it.

Amazing story of an outstanding man!!

This is a book of man who’s born into a royal family had the best of everything yet has fail to learn the basic fundamentals of not washing dirty linen in public. He ranted for almost 10 hours and the tone of his voice made me feel that there is more lies than truth. In short it’s Worst than watching Biggboss or the likes of that show.

If you want to hear a privileged man rant for 10 hours go ahead.

Was moved by the narration. Some parts were repetitive, but overall, great stuff! It is truly an eye-opener.

Touching and brutally honest!

Kudos for outing the vile tabloid press. A true insider account of harassment, betrayal and toadying to the press that goes on behind the scenes in the most famous family on the planet. Makes one wonder who is really in the drivers seat. The courieirs? The press? Definitely not the Royal Family. Write another book Harry. This time on the little men in grey suits that Princess Diana spoke of.

Glad you got your say Harry.

The initial two parts of the book I felt could have been better and I almost gave up listening. Felt something was missing... like a part of it was all a facade.

The last part felt more real to me.

On the whole... it has been a good attempt by Harry.

Missing Something!
