De Britse rechercheur Tom Thorne is te vaak over de schreef gegaan en draagt daarom weer het politie-uniform. Hij draait zware diensten: hij wordt ingezet op straat en moet bekeuringen uitschrijven of ingrijpen bij vechtpartijen in het uitgaansleven. Als een zelfmoord van een ouder echtpaar in Toms ogen te makkelijk opzij wordt geschoven, duikt hij in zijn vrije tijd dieper in de zaak.
