About this listen
THE REESE WITHERSPOON SUMMER YA BOOK CLUB PICK

A modern trans-Pacific twist on Pride and Prejudice, from an authentic team of debut authors who know their material, and deliver it heartwarmingly and hilariously

Inspired by Pride and Prejudice this modern tale captures the spirit and energy of Austen's original satire of manners, while updating and developing it for contemporary audiences, coming of age in the 2020s.

The quiet coastal community of Pippi Beach is rocked when a party of young Hollywood movie stars and influencers arrives for the summer. Like most of the locals, mum Lydia is thrilled but her teenage daughter Lily finds the Hollywood types are superficial and arrogant – especially Dorian Khan, the most famous of them all. Lily’s opinion is confirmed by handsome backpacker Alex, who has quite the story about Dorian’s past. On a holiday to Los Angeles, Lily stays with family friend Wilson, an ambitious player who introduces her to powerful movie producer Stacy Black. Lily is in turns amused and appalled by the excesses of the movie business, and more than a little surprised when Dorian Khan seeks her out. Could they actually become friends? And what’s more, has she been what she hopes never to be ... stupid?©2023 Angourie Rice & Kate Rice (P)2023 W. F. Howes Ltd

I hope this reaches the authors, especially Angourie. I have been a huge admirer of her work since the beginning. I’ve never witnessed a more talented person. Being around the same age as Angourie somehow makes watching her journey and everything she has accomplished feel even more special to me. I knew she was a great actor, but I didn’t know she was such a great writer. While obsessing over finding Emily, I discovered that Angourie had written this book, and knowing that it was also being adapted into a live-action film made my decision to start the audiobook even faster. I would consume any content featuring her.

The world that is created in the book through Angourie’s voice acting is so immersive that I was actually able to imagine her as Lily and Brendon as Dorian. I have never been to Pippi or LA, but I was able to see them in my head through her voice, as if there were a movie playing in my head.

The story itself is very good and worth adapting, but the effort with which it is narrated makes it such a great experience as a listener. I just didn’t want to put my headphones down and wanted to listen to it all in one go.

Can’t wait to see the live-action adaptation, and I hope that Angourie’s work reaches more people, especially across India, from where I belong.
