Doch nicht nur politische und militärische Ereignisgeschichte, sondern ebenso auch Soziales wie etwa die Klassenkämpfe zwischen Plebejern und Optimaten und ökonomische Faktoren finden ihr angemessenes Gewicht bei Mommsen.
