The Baronesses is a good old-fashioned memoir in the sense that it's a brilliantly detailed, chronological account of an ordinary person's extraordinary life (or in this case, lives), but with its gruesome revelations it's also a feat of bravery... the authors are two awe-inspiring individuals (Ceci Browning)

Frankly, it is jaw-dropping. Chapters unfold to reveal detail that is either blood-curdling, outrageous or so wildly aberrant it would be unbelievable were it not backed by documentation and public record. It is told entirely without self-pity, but with occasional bursts of humour, dry irony and anger. (Frances Hardy)
