Publisher's Summary

In Victorian England, headstrong adventuress Elizabeth takes up her late father's quest for a rare, miraculous plant. She faces a perilous sea voyage, unforeseen dangers and treachery that threatens her entire family.

In present-day Australia, Anna finds a mysterious metal box containing a sketchbook of dazzling watercolours, a photograph inscribed 'Spring 1886' and a small bag of seeds. It sets her on a path far from her safe, carefully ordered life and on a journey that will force her to face her own demons.

In this spellbinding botanical odyssey of discovery, desire and deception, Kayte Nunn has so exquisitely researched 19th-century Cornwall and Chile you can almost smell the fragrance of the flowers, the touch of the flora on your fingertips....

"I was transported to the 1880s and Chile, to contemporary Sydney and Kew. A gripping, warm-hearted read." (Joy Rhoades, author of The Woolgrower's Companion

Caroline Lee is superb! But the story not so much

I immediately buy every single audiobook that Caroline Lee narrates -- she is my all-time favorite narrator. I absolutely adore the novels by Kate Morton, Kimberley Freeman, Belinda Alexander, and some of the other Australian authors who write such gorgeous stories that weave together the past and the present. So naturally, I dove in eagerly, expecting this to be one of them. Unfortunately, it's just not. It's pretty boring. The plot moves sooooo slowly without much excitement or mystery or build-up, and the character development is weak. I wasn't enthralled with Elizabeth's story, and Anna's was just as dull. What a sad disappointment. I always feel badly giving negative reviews, but save your credit. I love Ms. Lee so much that I pushed my way through it, but ultimately, I gave up about half-way through. I just didn't care what happened, and I was completely bored. If you're looking for something similar to Kate Morton, sadly this just isn't it. And if you're a fan of Caroline Lee, wait for her next book to come out. As usual she was brilliant, yet I can't help but to wonder if she was just as bored recording this as I was reading it.

A great storyline and narrated by my favorite!

I enjoyed this book. I had not previously read any books by this author, and was pleasantly surprised. The story had a humorous quality about it in both past and present. Though sometimes tragic, the story constantly evolves, keeping the readers guessing. My favorite narrator, Caroline Lee does a wonderful job keeping her audiance engaged.

Genealogical fiction not Historical fiction

I would have given this 2 stars, though it was dull, but it ended so abruptly. Jumps between stories with no historical detail.Chili 1880's, Cornwall without a coast (except the love cove). Where's the history? More like the Hallmark channel.

Slow to start but hang in there.....it's worth it

It was a slow book and I really struggled around the 5-6th chapter, however the story start to get better not long after that and it's a great ending. Definitely finishes with a bang!!

Brilliant story and performance

One. Reading error, when Anna arrives in London , at the Airbnb, the reader calls her Elizabeth.
What a truely wonderfully crafted story. A book I had to hear from cover to cover, thus missing a nights sleep and a days work. Thanks for the enjoyment

Depth of story

Wow. The depth of story across generations is intriguing and highly entertaining. The history and depth of knowledge behind the story adds to its charm. It is a wonderful read. I’m so glad that I picked it up.
