About this listen

This reissue of the 1919 classic combines the immortal stories from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey into one glorious saga of heroism and magical adventure. Beloved by generations, Padraic Colum's masterful retelling of these epic adventures is remarkably fresh, consistently spellbinding, and unmatched for its richness and poetry. It carries a new generation of young readers to ancient Greece with Odysseus and Achilles who, guided by the gods, seek vengeance against the Trojans, and follows Odysseus on his perilous journey, through the land of the Cyclopes, past Circe the Enchantress, the terrible Charybdis and the six-headed serpent Scylla.(P)2000 Blackstone Audiobooks Action & Adventure Ancient Civilisations Classics Fairy Tales, Folk Tales & Myths Greek & Roman Historical Historical Fiction Literature & Fiction Short Stories History For Kids Kids Literature Myths For Children

This book was my first introduction to the Iliad & Odyssey. And it couldn't have been better! Padraic Colum tells the story beautifully and one can truly feel for all the characters. Robert Whitfield's narration is excellent. He modulates his voice so well to match various characters in the story. Thoroughly enjoyable! Kids will enjoy this one too, though it would be good if an adult can be by their side - since the language is from the early 1900s and some usages may sound a bit dated. But in no way does this detract from the readability. The story flows very smoothly.

Superb retelling of the Iliad & Odyssey
