The Devil Rides Out

Many consider it to be Dennis Wheatley's finest work, which is praise indeed for this world beating novelist. It was a huge best seller in the 1930s when it first came out, full of 1930s atmosphere, skilfully written and well researched, too - although Wheatley never practiced magic himself, he met with many of the most famous occultists of his day to make the book as authentic as possible.

In The Devil Rides Out, the Duke de Richleau and a friend find that one of their number is missing from a reunion, and it turns out that he has fallen under the influence of a black magic sect. Disbelieving at first, the Duke and his friends soon discover that magic and the powers of darkness are still alive and very real, as they fight a series of terrific earthly and occult battles to save their friend's soul.

The book was filmed in the 1960s, with Christopher Lee taking the lead role as the Duke, and he he is back in splendid form as he narrates for your listening pleasure.

Christopher Lee Makes it worthwhile.

Decent enough story if you like the Hammer film from the 70’s. Only really worth a listen for Christopher Lee’s narration.

Classic

An old favorite movie and book , masterfully narrated by Christopher Lee - excellent listening whilst commuting , a tale so gripping that I ended up spending 30 minutes sitting in the drive one evening waiting for the end of the chapter.

Superb narration by Sir Christopher Lee

Great story rattling along at a decent pace. Narrated by what must surely be the best possible choice of actor, Sir Christopher Lee, who played the Duc de Richleau in the 1968 film of the book. Truly excellent choice - well played, Audible.

Occult caper

The film unnerved me as a child, and the memory of evil beings called forth in a chalk pentacle, drawn on the floor of a grand English home, has stayed with me for years. Re-watching as an adult reveals the movie as more of a weirdly camp horror — but with some classic moments, a great cast, and fantastic performances. The novel is from the 1930s (the film was made in the ‘60s). It’s one of a series with increasingly outlandish plots, starring the same central character - the Duke de Richleau - played by Christopher Lee in the film of The Devil Rides Out. His narration here is spot-on: portentous, and pitch perfect. Indeed, it’s the best reason to get this audiobook. The plot itself is an occult caper - it’s bonkers stuff. But it’s well-written with plenty of action and some great scenes. Fans of the film should give this a try; but even if you’ve never heard of it, get it to listen to Lee.

The Devil rides out (Christopher Lee, abridged)

Bought mainly for the wonderful voice of Christopher Lee. Not keen on abridged versions but the story is still good. I did prefer Nick Mercer's unabridged version as the story hangs together better and Mercer is a fine performer but Lee's voice is pure joy
