The critically acclaimed international bestselling novel by one of Japan's premier storytellers, Keigo Higashino's The Devotion of Suspect X marks the first book in his beloved Detective Galileo mysteries.

"One of the great mystery and thriller books of all time!" (Time)

Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced, single mother who thought she had finally escaped her abusive ex-husband Togashi. When he shows up one day to extort money from her, threatening both her and her teenaged daughter Misato, the situation quickly escalates into violence and Togashi ends up dead on her apartment floor. Overhearing the commotion, Yasuko's next door neighbor, middle-aged high school mathematics teacher Ishigami, offers his help, disposing not only of the body but plotting the cover-up step-by-step.

When the body turns up and is identified, Detective Kusanagi draws the case and Yasuko comes under suspicion. Kusanagi is unable to find any obvious holes in Yasuko's manufactured alibi and yet is still sure that there's something wrong. Kusanagi brings in Dr. Manabu Yukawa, a physicist and college friend who frequently consults with the police. Yukawa, known to the police by the nickname Professor Galileo, went to college with Ishigami.

After meeting up with him again, Yukawa is convinced that Ishigami had something to do with the murder. What ensues is a high level battle of wits, as Ishigami tries to protect Yasuko by outmaneuvering and outthinking Yukawa, who faces his most clever and determined opponent yet.

its truly a sad world.
beautiful story , it shows some really dark sides of our society , and how we don't do or can not do anything to change it because of the existing structure of our society.

I hate my self now.

A murder mystery which redefines the concept of thrillers and spoilers! An absolute must-read, or should I say, must-hear.
The narration is expertly done, and lends itself beautifully to the book. Thanks for this gem, Audible.

A brilliant thriller with an excellent narration

David Pittu is my favorite narrator so far on audible. He brings life to each character by the unique tone. I loved the ending and each character. It was a little predictable for me but still, I loved it.

Love the narration!

I was a bit hesitant to read this because of the hype and I wondered what could be new in a detective novel. And I am glad that I was wrong. This is an excellent detective story. This is not a whodunnit or how they did it, but how the crime was covered up and how the detectives solved (?) the crime. The battle of wits between the 2 nerds - the Mathematician, Ishigami and the physicist, Yukawa (Prof Galileo) was too interesting. I liked some way some very nerdy problems were referred to without breaking the flow. Practical use of calculus? You have the answer for that too in this book :-)
It took a while for me to get used to the Japanese names and the audio narration by David Pittu. But then it didn't matter as I was completely immersed in the story.
I am surprised to see this is the 3rd book in the series but first in the English translation. I hope the English readers haven't missed a lot.

I am now a fan of Keigo Higashino
