When Harry Met Sally meets One Day, The Five-Year Hitch is the story of two friends who have known each other all their lives - falling in and out of love. Sam and Miles belong together, except every five years, there’s a hitch and they don’t end up together. ©2021 Melissa de la Cruz (P)2021 Audible Originals, LLC.The Five Year Hitch by Melissa De La Cruz is exactly what it claims to be. It is not quite a love story. Rather, it is a story about a connection, one that runs deeper than the entirety of their relationship.
I picked up this book because I was intrigued by its premise. The promise of it being “not quite a love story,” combined with the curious idea of knowing about the hitches that happen every five years, immediately caught my attention. And it truly was unique, whether it was the way the story was written or the way the narration unfolded. That was something new for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The story itself had that X-factor. Despite its short length (the audiobook is only 1 hour and 10 minutes long), the author successfully conveys the story, the chemistry between the couple, and their unique relationship arcs. And that is exactly what makes this story stand out.
Overall, The Five Year Hitch is a quick yet impactful listen that leaves you thinking long after it ends. It may not follow the traditional beats of a romance, but it makes up for it with emotional depth and originality. If you enjoy unconventional love stories that focus more on connection than grand gestures, this one is definitely worth picking up.
