The Hit is David Baldacci's blockbuster follow up to The Innocent, the smash-hit bestseller featuring U.S. government assassin, Will Robie.

When government hit man Will Robie is given his next target he knows he's about to embark on his toughest mission yet. He is tasked with killing one of their own, following evidence to suggest that fellow assassin Jessica Reel has been turned. She's leaving a trail of death in her wake including her handler.

The trap is set. To send a killer to catch a killer. But what happens when you can't trust those who have access to the nation's most secret intelligence?

The Hit is the third thriller in the Will Robie series by David Baldacci, preceding The Guilty.

Critic Reviews

Robie and Reel are complex characters, and anything they do is a pleasure to follow . . . Baldacci knows how to get readers to turn the pages, and he's in top form here.

The Hit is David Baldacci doing what he does best—crafting a fast-moving, intelligent thriller that keeps you invested from beginning to end. From the opening chapters, the story grabs hold and steadily tightens its grip, delivering twists, betrayals, and revelations at just the right moments.

What impressed me most was the plot construction. Baldacci layers the narrative with remarkable precision, allowing the mystery to unfold naturally while constantly giving the reader new questions to consider. The cat-and-mouse dynamic, shifting loyalties, and moral ambiguities make for a thoroughly engaging read.

Will Robie continues to be one of Baldacci's finest creations. He's efficient, dangerous, and highly disciplined, yet never feels one-dimensional. The supporting cast complements him well, adding both tension and emotional stakes to the story.

If I were to offer one minor criticism, it would be the climax. While it is certainly satisfying and well executed, it doesn't quite reach the heights that the preceding plot seemed to promise. The journey itself is so strong, so meticulously built, that the final resolution feels slightly less impactful than the road leading to it. That said, "slightly" is the operative word here—the ending is still very good and brings the story to a fitting conclusion.

The audiobook narration elevates an already excellent novel, maintaining suspense and momentum throughout.

For me, The Hit succeeds because of its superb plotting. Not every thriller manages to keep its readers engaged at every stage, but Baldacci accomplishes that here with ease. A compelling listen, a cleverly constructed story, and another reminder of why Baldacci remains one of the most reliable names in the genre.

An easy five stars.

This is the first audible that actually managed to hold my attention and my first complete listening. Baldacci is brilliant as usual and has written yet another terrific book. Tight plot, moves along at a brisk pace and has a brilliant ending. The narrators are absolutely amazing.
