Publisher's Summary

We live in a close-knit community. Thirty houses surrounding a square of garden that is perfect for our kids. We congregate here on major holidays, each family bringing a plate and sharing food and conversation. It’s in the garden that I first met her. The woman who would worm her way into my family and piece by piece tear it apart....

I should have known something was wrong from the very beginning. She seemed perfect in so many ways: She floated through the baby shower, a warm smile on her face, chatting to strangers with ease. At first, I thought it was sweet that she offered to help me, that she made an effort to get to know us, that she brought over games and knew Luna’s favorite foods.... I had no idea that I couldn’t trust another mother....

I should have known that someone would eventually discover the secret in my marriage. Why I never believe a word my husband says - and why he shouldn’t believe me. But how could a woman I only just met be the one to find it out?

If I’d known, I’d have called the police sooner.

And maybe I’d have prevented that dreadful scene. Every neighbor peering through their curtains as the sirens wailed in our street.

I could have protected my family.

I could have stopped what happened next....

Cheap thrills. Mediocre.

The story was lengthy and very slow paced. Plots stretched a tad too long than necessary. Characters were common. Story wasn't very gripping or suspenseful. Half way through, most of the plot was predictable, othen than a few given surprise revelations. Mostly, it was the Desperate housewives (Series) minus all the murders, just the scandals and one nights.

This character named Frankie is annoying.

I like this story but ughhh some characters are just so selfish... specially this character Frankie.. is just too much... she is too self absorbed. She is full of herself! She has portrayed it well.

I kinda feel bad for Celeste though.... she's had things the hard way tbh. She didn't really deserve this. She's actually a soft person. but then again, people bring the worst out of other people. Even Lloyd & Walter. They were good people who became bad coz of 4 dumb adults. :)

The narrations are point on! Love them all.

This was an amazing narrative.

People all around us have many layers, emotions, past and histories. What happens when you welcome someone next door, only to have the carpet pulled out from under your feet soon after.
How do you trust someone? How well do we know who lives next door?

A wonderful complex plot of human relations, lies and a complicated mesh of relations. Welcome to the neighborhood 😜"

loved it!

Great book about mom friends with a little mystery tossed in. Takes a couple if chapters to figure out everyone but after that it's easy to follow.

Story is decent- narration is a fail

Be ready to pay attention... lots of characters & lots of time hops, and the narrators didn’t help me with differentiation. If you typically enjoy these performers, this may be a win. I don’t, but I took a chance on it. The story did grab me, but it grabbed me in a way that if I would have found a new release that looked better, I would have left it and MAYBE come back later.

Great

My only complaint is about the end. I wish there was more storyline about Walt and about Lloyd. I don’t want to give out spoilers. Also the narrator IMO sounded the same with everyone and was monotone.

If you can make it to the last 2 hrs

I struggled with this book for a while, but it got more fast paced and interesting in the last 2 hours of the book.

Hard to finish

This is an ok book if you’re 16 years old. A lot of repetitive information. As if the author was just trying to fill pages to create a novel.

Read before you buy

This was not my type of book, but I am sure many will like it. If you are on the fence about reading it, here are some things to consider…

The first several chapters are very cryptic, as the 3 women worry about secrets they each have but won’t unveil until the later chapters

Then it’s a bit of a Merry-go-round. He cheated, she cheated, then some whose the daddy questions, she’s a good mother she’s a bad mother.. I lied, no you lied…add a Christian man with some questionable actions.. and there you go. Round and round.

There are clear winners at the end, but I think the reader can ultimately decide whose a victim and whose a villain.

Entertaining

While I mostly enjoyed the storyline, I think that it was a bit unrealistic. The author could have achieved the same level of enjoyment without all the plots, the sub-plots and the sub-sub-plots. But overall, worth the purchase.

Uggghhhh. I cant even finish this one .....

Arrgghhh - I hate it when a book gets good reviews but you just cant get into it. The main thing for me is the narrators. OMG so annoying. I dont know if it is because I am not American - but I just cant stand any of them - a very slow story is not helped by whingey whiney bad narration. I am about 3 hours in - I want to like it, and I kept persevering, but I just cant do it to myself. I am sure there will be good twists - but I am out - and I just never do this, but I hope others enjoy what I just couldnt .....

Great except one thing….

…. The narrator for Celeste was like a female
Maxwell Smart from Get Smart… the most annoying voice that almost caused me to stop listening!!

What's up with the narration?

How old are these characters? I can see that others managed to make it through and give the story a positive review despite disliking the narration..

But seriously what's the go? Sailor and Frankie sound like high school seniors, talking about high school drama.. Are their characters really this young? I can't take the story seriously with their voices, I really needed them to sound like adults.. Couldn't listen.

Good story but quite repetitive thoughts/monologs

The story is good but I felt (this is super subjective) the thoughts of the characters became quite repetitive and you could forsee the ending mid way through.

Great thriller and easy listen!

I don’t know what the negative reviews were on about but firstly, the narrators were fine! There are differences to each of the women’s voices so if I ever missed the POV at the beginning of the chapter, I can already distinguish who’s speaking.

I didn’t know what to expect out of this one since I didn’t read the summary and was basically just looking for something easy to listen to, but I’m glad I found it! From the issues with the different characters, I would put them in their mid to late 20s, to early/mid 30s. They definitely don’t sound like characters talking about high school drama, but as I said, it’s an easy listen and the setup could’ve done with some refinement. The plot twists were definitely pretty interesting and I had to put everything down towards the end to make sure I got all the details of the reveal.

Overall, a fairly good, easy listen of a thriller.

Well written

I enjoyed listening to this book. So many twists and turns. Unexpected ending too. The back stories were great at explaining the characters choices.
