Lucy had ideas in her brain that made life interesting. No person living had a sympathetic understanding for her dreams like he had. She made a picture of complete devotion to her aims in which she awaited new duties.
Gabe was certainly a happy fellow at this time. He tried being a corporate employee, but he was not fit for that: his mind was too fond of wandering in its own way. He wanted to travel in his youth, and absorb new ideas. Hence, he made a generous resolution that his action should be beneficent. He became one of those drifting photo journalists who never marry or have children of their own. This led to their lives being lived apart. Ladies should not be kept waiting. Lucy was apt to be impatient.
Darren Maxwell was as good as most of us. How could there be any commonness in a man so well-bred, so ambitious of social distinction, so generous and unusual in his views of social duty? He found Lucy more adorable than anyone. He gave her a little waddling puppy which could not fail to please her and delighted her beyond expression. He was always about big romantic gestures! They fell in an attitude of easy intimacy. He felt himself to be in love in the right place, and was ready to endure a great deal of predominance. He made her an offer; and she accepted him, especially since she was so pleased with him about his plans.
Gabe had communicated to Lucy that he had met Raina. Then, on Lucy’s wedding day, he mentioned that he had broken up with Raina. Some years later, Gabe came back to New York and showcased a flattering homage to Lucy at his exhibition!
