Publisher's Summary
The Journals of Minalan the Spellmonger.
After his eventful trip to the non-magical molopor in the distant domain of Anghysbel, Minalan’s return to civilization and magic finds him challenged by the changes wrought in the crypt of Szal the Yith. With nine distinctive sets of memories, besides his own, Minalan struggles to define himself in a turbulent time.
Things have never been more dire for the nascent Magelaw and the kingdom of Castalshar: the Duchy of Merwyn is encroaching the borders, the pirate realm of Farise is raiding shipping to a dreadful degree, and the dark lord Mycin Amana has captured Darkfaller, the largest castle in the land merely a few dozen miles away from the capital in the heart of the kingdom.
While that brazen act halted the civil war brewing between the ascendent magi and the deteriorating aristocracy of knights, the Spellmonger’s influence and intervention has never been more important. But is he up to the task?
With his brain buzzing with memories and feelings that aren’t his own and a list of vital tasks he must accomplish in order to save the world of Callidore from destruction, Minalan sets pen to parchment to chronicle his days in the heat of the struggle. His journal reveals the internal conflicts he battles, insights into his role and place in history, the difficulties managing his own political rise, and the constant effort of keeping his mind sharp enough to handle it all.
Yet the cracks are showing. People are talking about the Spellmonger, who mutters to himself and indulges in strange practices. His moodiness and distraction are visible for all to see, eroding some people’s confidence in his ability to lead . . . and leading others who sense vulnerability to strike out at the master mage. Violent episodes and fits of melancholy punctuate his struggles with sanity. He details his self-doubts, his petty grievances, his deep brooding about his family and life in general, all as a means to keep himself sane.
But people will whisper, and whisper they do. It’s becoming obvious: the Spellmonger has clearly become the Mad Mage of Sevendor!

BRILLIANT
Every book leads to the next and then on to the next linking the story and showing a shadow of what could be in the next one. But this doesn’t offer a shadow but so many things as to prove just as mad as Min himself

Entertaining dream
I appreciate the refresher course on Minilan and the state of the duchies. But there is sufficient evidence to indicate that this story describes a dream Minilan had. None of the events in his journal have taken place. He probably didn't even write a journal.

Different but Excellent
The style and flow of this book is a completely different take at how and what Min thinks. I was skeptical at first and the length of the book was worrisome, but all in all. It’s a masterpiece of creation and the information bound within it was superb to the last letter.

This book finally went on sale for less than a credit. It took a site wide sale, but the book was well worth it.

Another great book!
I love all of the Spellmonger books, and I adore John Lee- but I’m rating it lower because he keeps changing the pronunciation of so many words and names!! It’s driving me crazy and without being able to see the actual words, I only have his pronunciation to rely upon.

So boring
I’m not sure why this has been released as a book. Nothing happens, it’s like reading a 7 hour shopping list. I don’t mind the 0.5 books when there is a fun story involved but this just feels like filler or probably a way to retro fit some story line in the new book. I love this series but the last couple of releases have just been awful. This used to be a fun series but it’s taking itself a bit too seriously these days and has forgotten what made it good in the first place.

A partner piece
This book gets some of the more mundane elements of the story out of the way in preparation for book 15. It does have spoilers for book 15 and you'll already know outcomes or what happens in certain scenarios of book 15. I can't say I particularly enjoyed it but it gives context for the next book.

Slowish start, epic last half.
A little low start and a lot of new names, and behaviors to learn, this making the book a bit slow at start, hints about "spoilers" in the next book but avoids them very well.
The last hour is a real nail-biter.

Very interesting read and different
Woah what an interesting and new way to read the spellmonger series. It grabs you to read more and more the longer you read the book. Even though it is a much shorter read, it still hits the spot of the spellmonger hit.
A title of the spellmonger series you MUST NOT look past, and just buy it ASAP really. :)
