Story
The stakes have never been higher. If Percy Jackson and Annabeth fail in their quest, there'll be hell on Earth. Literally. Wandering the deadly realm of Tartarus, every step leads them further into danger. And, if by some miracle they do make it to the Doors of Death, there's a legion of bloodthirsty monsters waiting for them. Meanwhile, Hazel and the crew of the Argo II have a choice: to stop a war or save their friends. Whichever road they take one thing is certain - in the Underworld, evil is inescapable.

Though the Greek and Roman crew members of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen - all of them - and they're stronger than ever. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea's army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. Story
Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood. I never asked to be the son of a Greek God. I was just a normal kid, going to school, playing basketball, skateboarding. The usual. Until I accidentally vaporized my maths teacher. That's when things started really going wrong. Now I spend my time fighting with swords, battling monsters with my friends, and generally trying to stay alive. This is the one where Zeus, God of the Sky, thinks I've stolen his lightning bolt - and making Zeus angry is a very bad idea.

Publisher's Summary
The explosive third part in Rick Riordan's number-one series - set in the world of Percy Jackson - now available as an unabridged audio download. One fatal prophecy. Seven brave demigods. A quest to find - and close - the door of death.
Annabeth felt as if someone had draped a cold washcloth across her neck. She heard that whispering laughter again, as if the presence had followed her from the ship. She looked up at the Argo II. Its massive bronze hull glittered in the sunlight. Part of her wanted to kidnap Percy right now, get on board and get out of here while they still could. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to go terribly wrong. She couldn't risk losing Percy again.

A great audiobook!
This is a great audiobook, well-written and definitely worth listening to. The narrator did an amazing job and I wished he could've narrated the other 2 books in the series instead of Nick Chamian. It's more of a book aimed towards preteens and teens but if you like action and Greek mythology, go for it!

What more could you want?!
What made the experience of listening to The Mark of Athena the most enjoyable?
There is so much about this series I like, I don't know where to start ... except with Rick Riordan's characters. If you know anything about the genre, or his previous books, you'll have heard of Percy Jackson & his "scary Athena girl" Annabeth, but the newcomers in this 5-book adventure are as vivid and unique as any we've met so far & I soon found myself rooting hard for Leo, Piper, Frank & Hazel; even developing a soft-spot for Jason as time went on. (No mean feat, since he is rather annoyingly perfect.)
The plot careens along at Riordan's ubiquitous hair-raising pace, the narrative leaping from character to character every few chapters, which could have been confusing, but instead brings a breadth and depth to the tale it wouldn't have had otherwise; allowing you to experience the goings-on from multiple viewpoints.
Riordan writes with such charm, wit and humour you can't help enjoying yourself, & the cameo appearances of various gods and monsters (a slurring Bacchus and Leo's hysterical encounter with Narcissus and his fan-club being particular highlights) serve to draw you ever deeper into the crazy world of his ADHD demi-gods. Which is where you'll want to be, after only a few chapters.
What other book might you compare The Mark of Athena to, and why?
This is the 3rd book in a 5-book sequence, & I strongly suggest you begin at the beginning; with book 1: The Lost Hero ... if you don't feel you can spare time -or credits- enough to go all the way back to Riordan's first opus, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, which details the early adventures of "just your average Son of Poseidon ..." & his initiation into the world of half-bloods, monster-fighting & ridiculously dangerous quests.
What does Joshua Swanson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Joshua Swanson is one of the best narrators I've come across in all my Audible adventures: he has such an engaging style, great charm and a gift for characterisation that's second to none. Everyone has their own "voice" and attitude, which he conveys brilliantly; though my favourite has to be Leo Valdez, for whom Swanson affects a lovely wry drawl and strong Hispanic accent. He really seems to "get" the material, & relish reading it, which makes it a joy to listen to.
I was very disappointed to learn the last 2 books are read by someone else ...
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed so much whilst listening to this, & the previous books in the series, I had to stop myself from playing it in public, since people on trains & buses tend to look at you askance when you break into helpless fits of giggles with no prior warning & no visible excuse.
So much happens in Riordan's books they can be a bit of an emotional roller-coaster, but not a bad way. He has very deft touch when it comes to writing moving scenes without being in any way sentimental: you react because you've grown to care about the characters and learned enough of their backstory to anticipate when things are going to be hard or painful for them ... & know precisely why. You see it coming, & wince for them.
Any additional comments?

Mark Of Athena Review: The Story Just Got Started
Mark of Athena Narrator Josh Swanson: B(75%)
Performance (Average) : Unfortunately this is the main thing that drags down this audiobook, it’s s not bad but not the best you will find on Audible Books. The narrator does a good job at making sure you can differentiate between the characters. At times he can feel slow and undramatic.
Story (Good): (Spoilers for Previous Books)
Mark of Athena ties together the previous 2 books it starts with the Greeks and Romans meeting and unraveling each other’s existence. The story does at sometimes feel like it has fallen into the formula of the previous 2 books but does vary enough to keep it interesting. At sometimes the character interactions can feel a bit artificial. Being a book that focussed on 7 characters some go on being very much undeveloped on the other hand the characters that they do focus on mature a lot adding lots of depth to them.

Great story, but terrible narration
I enjoyed this book, but found it hard to finish due to a bad narrator.

Brilliance from go to woh
This book has taken the series to a new level. The characters are portrayed by the reader as I believe the author intended and this has created the feeling of being there with them. I would recommend this book to all readers who can get a hold of it. Whether you are 8 or 80 this book will thrill and amuse you. From the thrill of the dangers faced to the corny humour of Leo. From the rivalry between the characters to the love they share the book grows until it suddenly is ended and we are left hanging out for the next book.

Fabulous fast paced adventures. Loving learning about Greek and Roman gods. Time to download the next one. We can't wait.
