Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Mechanic written and read by Marc 'Elvis' Priestley.

In the high-octane atmosphere of the Formula One pit lane, the spotlight is most often on the superstar drivers. And yet, without the technical knowledge, competitive determination and outright obsession from his garage of mechanics, no driver could possibly hope to claim a spot on the podium. These are the guys who make every world champion, and any mistakes can have critical consequences.

That's not to say the F1 crew is just a group of highly skilled technical engineers, tweaking machinery in wind tunnels and crunching data through high-spec computers. These boys can seriously let their hair down. Whether it be parties on luxury yachts in Monaco or elaborate photo opportunities in gravity-defying aeroplanes, this is a world which thrills on and off the track.

Join McLaren's former number one mechanic, Marc 'Elvis' Priestley, as he tours the world, revealing some of Formula One's most outrageous secrets and the fiercest rivalries, all fuelled by the determination to win.

This is Formula One as you've never seen it before.

Great insight.

Loved the content. For a first narration it was good but i found the constant inflections a bit hard to handle.
In all, a great book though

Great insights to the world of F1

I’ve been closely following Marc’s moves on Twitter and on YouTube for the past year or so, but haven’t had the possibility to read his boon until now. What a great and thrilling ride Marc’s able to take us on with him. If you’re a F1 fan or even intersted in sports in general, this one’s a must read. Also the Unkown Kimi Räikkönen is a definite recommendation for all you fans and readers out there.

well read, enjoyable and (for me) inspirational

I'll admit I purchased this after I had watched several of Marc's YouTube videos and consider myself a fan of his so this may have colored my enjoyment but I thought it was a excellent. I've found him and his attitude very inspirational and admirable in general but I do highly recommend this audiobook.

Fascinating, read by author

Great insight into events that true F1 fans will remember well. The author doing the narration really added to the peeling back of the layers of life as an F1 pitcrew/team member. Many of the vignettes will make you laugh, wince or have fond recollections.

Fun... but slow down!!!!!!!

as an Olympic games level athletic trainer, I've often liked my profession to that of a car racing pit crew. so I picked up Priestley's book looking forward to seeing if my analogy held true. it did, in spades! fun, fast paced, hilarious... but the narration was so fast, it wore me out, and I couldn't listen for too long. by slowing the playback speed down to about 9, I was able to thoroughly enjoy all of the stories and the rest of the book. just a suggestion, it will be worth it!

Good read - a bit tamed down though

Elvis does a great job telling the “behind the sciences story of F1. Interesting for someone new to the sport like myself to learn and better appreciate the pit crews and support teams that make fantastic racing happen.
My only issue was that I felt there was quite a bit of detail left out. Elvis is very respectful of the companies and teams he worked with and it felt like there was a lot left unsaid. However, it is still good listening and provided interesting insight.

Incredible Insight into an Incredible Sport

This is the first motorsport audio book I've listened to but I feel I can say it is probably one of the best out there. As an F1 fan this was beyond the level of insight I expected to get from this experience and it felt like exactly that, an experience. Marc really tells the whole story and takes you along on his wonderful journey through F1 and you are left feeling like you were there with him. Top notch work.

Expected more.

This book was alright. I think it was a wise decision to have the author read it, for this type of book.

It just wasn't very interesting. If you had followed the 2007 and 2008 F1 seasons then a lot of the racing stuff, e.g. spygate, the Fernando and Lewis rift etc is already well documented and known about.

There were some funny moments especially surrounding a pair of hair clippers, but a lot of it comes off as silly boys pranks. Destroying hotel rooms and hire cars isn't funny. It's rude and disrespectful. The book lost me immediately with those tales, but I persevered anyway just to finish it.

An average book that I'm happy I finished but wouldn't recommend anyone to go out of there way for to read or listen to it.

Fascinating but just too self-serving

Fascinating stories, a great insight into the world of F1 but unfortunately so amazingly self involved and smug it was a struggle at times listening to his whiney, entitled voice. As a book it’s great.

A good insight in behind the scenes in F1

A fascinating incite into the battle with Alonso and Hamilton, could do without the childish smashing up of hotels and hire cars though, it just comes across as posh boys being idiots.
