Her sister in law Marin had inquisitive-looking grey eyes. She kept the house orderly and tightly feathered like a birds’ nest. She was ever impatient of weakness, and hysteria was wholly beyond her endurance. Mercy, what solemn speeches she gave!
There was a distinct coldness between the family members. They had taken Nella and dressed her up and made a fool of her. What a confounded shame! In order of experience she was still young, and in looking forward to an unfavorable possibility she could not but feel that resignation to solitude was more difficult after the temporary illumination of hope.
Nella had the strongest dependence on Marin’s prudence. She admired the stupendous woman, who had wise opinions about everything.
A pity, I am sure. It was a tragedy!
