Daisy Darker is arriving at her grandmother’s house for her 80th birthday. It is Halloween, and Seaglass—the crumbling Cornish house perched upon its own tiny private island—is at one with the granite rocks it sits on. The Darker family haven’t all been in the same place for over a decade, and when the tide comes in, they’ll be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours. Teddy Crutcher has won Teacher of the Year at the prestigious Belmont Academy. Everyone thinks he's brilliant. Only you know the truth. They all smile when he tells us his wife couldn't be more proud - though, if they stopped to think, they would realise no one has seen her in a while. They're impressed when he doesn't let anything distract him - even the tragic death of a school parent. Even when the whispers start, saying it was murder. Average
It's a very average story, with the reader easily being able to guess what might have happened with the missing persons. The whole story is a simple one which has been dragged out far too much with a lot of non essentials writing, ive heard the family upstairs novel too by the same author which also had a not very complicated plot but it was well written with a good amount of suspense. Honestly don't understand why the book this book has been so highly rated on Goodreads

A mystery worth its name
The book is so well written, it is literally impossible to guess the conclusion. Twists and turns at absolute correct places. Left me holding my breath till the end. However the character development could have been better.

FABULOUS, FABULOUS LISTEN
For lovers of the mystery/suspense genre, this is a book not to be missed. I think this is the best Lisa Jewell book yet and this author just continues to outdo herself. As far as writing is concerned, there is not one foot out of place. The plot is tight and well constructed, the characters are each well drawn and the performance by Joanne Froggatt is perfect. It is a book I just wanted to never end and thoroughly recommend to all lovers of good books.

Boring Cliché after Boring Cliché
This has such great reviews. Incomprehensible that anyone could have enjoyed it. Tear-jerkingly boring. So, completely characterless girl who never tells a joke, laughs or says anything interesting but is a simpering cliché of a heroine - so bland it's actually weird - loves mummy, hardly ever wears make up, doesn't approve of swearing and studies hard - oh, wait, she's also, very importantly 'not posh', gets mixed up with evil posh people who have 'priveleged laughter' and are generally bad. Not only utterly banal characterisation making the whole thing absurd (not helped by the narrator's baby voice for the heroine), but plot involving spiral staircases, hidden tunnels and clues in paintings that a second woman-with-no-personality randomly catches sight of while being fed clues. Misogynistic, pathetically trying to grab the lowest common denominator reader with simple, salt of the earth heroine and evil posh anti-heroine (the only half-drawn character in the book) and just....God, so boring.

Bloated, Long-winded with no payoff
I fell asleep on this book so many times it got to the point where I didn't even bother to go back to the parts I'd missed. I really feel like this could've been better but the romantic situationships weren't developed enough for us to care about any of them. The ending was really disappointing.
