Publisher's Summary

We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic, but despite being inundated with diet advice we are only getting fatter. We count calories and exercise regularly, yet still the pounds won't budge. Why?

In this highly enjoyable and provocative book, Dr Jason Fung sets out a groundbreaking new theory: that obesity is caused by our hormones rather than a lack of self-control.

He reveals that overproduction of insulin in the body is the root cause of obesity and obesity-related illnesses including type 2 diabetes and offers robust scientific evidence that reversing insulin resistance is the only way to lose weight in the long term.

It turns out that when we eat is just as important as what we eat, so in addition to his five basic steps - a set of lifelong eating habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels - Dr Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight - for good.

Worth a million dollars

An ordinary eye opener, convincingly explains the science of obesity and nails down on how to lose weight as much as how not to.
Written by the super expert Dr. Jason Fung, who covers all research literatures on this subject to date, this book is as authoritative as it gets.
Highly recommend this gem!

In-depth explanation about Obesity

This book clearly made us understand the importance of fasting, role of insulin and obesity.
This is my first audio book and it was very interesting to listen to the narration.
This will definitely help us in preventing obesity and other lifestyle diseases.

Excellent Book

The best book on obesity ever. Clear and concise and scientific. Makes so much sense. I think the insulin story is the best part. Only trouble is that 70% of insulin secretion is genetically determined and only 30% is under our control :-( Would be nice to be able to access the forward by Tim Noakes and the tables on fasting which are inaccessible on the audio book.

Insightful book about Healthy Living and Lifestyle

I really enjoyed the book. The message in the book makes a lot of sense. For someone who is not patient, they might see the beginning of the book to be less interesting and too medical or too much deep dive into some sections. But I later understood why the deep dive initially was important to understand after moving along further into the book. I can recommend this can be by far the best book to help you understand if there is anyone trying to understand the formula of healthy eating and weightloss challenges or plans

There’s so much research dispelling all the diet myths we’ve been fed. Jason Fung does a sterling job of putting all the facts together (from reputable publications) and identifying the underlying issues causing obesity.

Very informative

I found the book informative. Sometimes a bit too technical for my non medical background but clearly the author has done his research and has exceptional knowledge on diets and the history thereof. A bit too much repetition in general, and would have like more information on Intermittent fasting.

Too much problem, too little solution...

A whopping 90% of this book is dedicated to proving history wrong. Jason May be correct in his analysis, but for someone who has spent his adult life looking for practical advice (that works) I found myself frustrated.

This book I think is aimed at doctors who see an epidemic of obesity and want some evidence to argue with colleagues on what the best approach to fixing it is.

For the ‘man in the street ‘ struggling with obesity he advice in the last 2 chapters boils down to:

1. Reduce added sugar
2. Make sure any carbs you consume are from ‘whole foods’
3. Implement a 24 or 36 hour fasting regime

Most of the practical steps outlined here are to be found in better forms on the internet.

Leave the other 90% of the book to the doctors and scientists...

Superb and a Game Changer.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The detail and the in depth explanations of physiolog and aetiology of obesity is second to none in my opinion. The delivery of information is set out in such a way that you cannot fail to understand the implications.

An extremely methodical written book. Repeats itself just enough to get the point to hit home. I listened at the slowest setting to absorb it more readily.

I have total Faith that Dr Fung has done his research and constantly refers to academic papers and critically analyses them in a manner that I would do myself. This gives me the confidence to trust his opinions without me having to spend the time trawling the internet looking for others opinions. I still do that but after reading the book I already know the answers.

It really is exceptional and would recommend to anyone not just to people trying to lose weight or cure their diabetes.

The narrator is also absolutely superb. This is how I would imagine Dr Fung reading it himself but possible better as it is minus the "right" after nearly every sentence. Just a small critique after Listening to lots of Dr Fung podcasts and YouTube postings.

All round 5 stars and intend on listening to this repeatedly until the belly fat has gone!!

HARDLY EVER LEAVE REVIEWS, BUT HAD TO FOR THIS

If your diets have worked, plateaued, then failed and you've gone back to your original weight (or heavier) read this!

I was always thin in my youth (a size 8, 7-stone teenager). Then, as the decades passed, I got heavier and heavier. In my twenties: 8 stone. Thirties: 9 stone. Forties: 10 stone. Then, approaching fifty, I got on the scales to find myself at 11 stone. That may not sound that heavy but I never got used to the rolls of fat around my stomach, how much harder it was to exercise, how much more cellulite I had. In general, I didn't feel good. And if I kept going, by 90 I was going to be 15 stone and probably dead!! :)

Throughout my thirties and forties, I have tried EVERY diet there is: Weight Watchers, The Cabbage Soup Diet, The Ketogenic Diet, The Atkins Diet, The Juice Diet. I've run for an hour followed by an hour's swim three times a week. I've tried Paul McKenna's I can make you thin hypnosis. Even some crazy guy's advice to pretend you're running from a tiger before you go to sleep at night!!! You name it. I've done it. On each diet, I'd lose 3-7 lbs, plateau, and then put it all back on again, adding another 14 pounds every decade.

I thought I was doing something wrong. I'd feel myself slipping on these diets that weren't maintainable in the long term, and blame myself.

Then I found this book and everything fell into place.

I read this a month ago and gradually built up my fasting regime: 12 hours, then 24, then 36. This week, I've gone 4 days without any problems at all. I make the broth, I take vitamins, I drink lots of water and tea. But I break the rules a bit too. I drink a lot of milky coffee (instead of coffee with cream which makes me retch after drinking that too often on the keto diet) and I still treat myself to a low alcohol beer or two at night.

And even without following the rules to the letter, I've lost 14lbs in a month.

Finally, my weight has taken a turn.

Just buy this book! Best thing I ever did! Best book I've ever bought.

Thank you, Jason Fung.

Repetitive and long winded

Although the science may be sound, he takes far too long to explain it, doesn't get to the point until near the end and is very tedious to listen to. Very disappointing, not suitable for audible and I've returned the book!

Superb content, excellent narration

This book is brilliant, it offers all the scientific backup and research studies that you would expect if you’re asked to buy into a certain view and is described in an easy to understand format.
I’m a Personal Trainer and it has helped to reinforce my understanding of how the body processes food. It gives a well rounded holistic view and I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Can be a bit scientific, but overall a good listen

Jason has some great observations about our eating habits and how they get bad. Ultimately he recommends fasting, having tried it I have to say he is correct - but trust what your body tells you.

Monotonous, repetitive, hard work

I'm sure if I could bear to listen to another 7 hours of this book I might glean some useful information, but the problem is the repetitive nature of the writing, teamed with the monotonous voice of the narrator. Cut to the chase! Don't take several hours to make just one point.

Not a great listen but potentially life changing

I really didn't enjoy listening to this book - it was delivered well but the text was repetitive and rambling with some annoying metaphors. I didn't find the author convincing but as it progressed I became more accepting of his argument. I really wanted it to get to the point for every chapter. Nonetheless, it does present a compelling case for radically decreasing sugar and how to reset one's hormonal - insulin thermostat. If you can hang in there until the last couple of chapters it is worth the wait. You could go straight to the "solution" but you will miss understanding the reasoning and hence may make some errors when implementing the suggestions. I will be trying this out and see how it goes for permanent weight loss. It could be the best weight loss solution thus far.... though that has been said many times before about diets, as the book itself acknowledges, so proceed with caution - albeit with some confidence that this could be the one!!

Makes perfect sense!

Don't be put off by the title, I am not overweight but just have an interest in nutrition, health and wellbeing. Heavy or thin, everybody should read this! This book is enlightening, it just makes so much sense! It is clearly explained and easy to understand the 'mechanics' of how our bodies work. The narrator took me a few minutes to get used to, but now I could not imagine another voice presenting it, he is entertaining and expressive. Some of the messages are repeated over and over, but there's a reason for that - they are all things that people probably already know, but obviously ignore/forget. It explains why our forebears all ate more fat and carbs then we "think" or "are told" we should, yet they did not get fat! If I had been battling weight gain for years, I think I would cry tears of joy for the information offered in this book! The statistics are interesting and well presented. Save yourself from more years of failing dieting, read this book!!! Highly recommended for ALL ages.

I am down 10 kgs and steadily losing .5kg per week.

This book has changed my life!

I have dieted my whole life, and have slowly become bigger and bigger.
Every chapter of this book had me amazed, it is so simple, yet the diet/food/health industry and the higher authorities are adamant that their way is right, so why aren't we all thin?!
It makes so much sense, if you are struggling with your weight, open your mind and listen to this book.
I feel like I've found the answer to my life's biggest puzzle. Xx

Great scientific analysis

Really liked the thorough analysis this book goes through - most books about obesity have 1 chapter background then 20 on why they have the magic solution. This is 20 chapters of explanation of the challenges of obesity and a short guide to how to implement simple changes to fight this disease.

Very informative

Some great information in here but I don’t necessarily believe it all.... women and in particular, those with existing hormone issues, especially thyroid, need to be careful with low carb.... done great takeaways in this book but will be great to have a version specific to women.

THANK YOU

I love this book. It is the best book that explains the myths we had previously believed about fatness. I particularly love how Jason presents the findings actual studies. I understand so much more now and I can't stop telling people about this book!

A must read

I've been following IF for a few months now and hadn't seen a real difference. I was recommended to read/listen to this book, allowing for a better understanding of the different components that are needed for successful weightloss. I would suggest everyone read this before starting IF or anything similar. I realized I needed to change more of my diet ways to help with the IF process. Still a bit too early to give my overall success with this way of eating, but I'm feeling good about it, and simply it makes perfect sense.
