In The Ocean in the School, Rick Bonus tells the stories of Pacific Islander students as they and their allies struggled to transform a university they believed did not value their presence.
Drawing on dozens of interviews with students he taught, advised, and mentored between 2004 and 2018 at the University of Washington, Bonus outlines how, despite the university's promotion of diversity and student success programs, these students often did not find their education to be meaningful, leading some to leave the university. As these students note, they weren't failing school; the school was failing them. Bonus shows how students employed the ocean as a metaphor as a way to foster community and to transform the university into a space that valued meaningfulness, respect, and critical thinking. In sharing these students' insights and experiences, Bonus opens up questions about measuring student success, the centrality of antiracism and social justice to structurally reshaping universities, and the purpose of higher education.

🔸SUPERFICIAL SCHOOL ATMOSPHERE
🔹if most schools had even 1/5th of all this, it'd be heavens lol..but bullying, superficial talks are more common with them.. it's no wonder why some kids find it hard to stay there.
📝chapter - we're in school to discover : 18m : being in the school to learn how to learn & learn how to do things rather than just rattifying information is an approach all academic institutions need.
🔹22m: choosing a career - the reason career choices are hard is because schools prep students for future majors, but kids have no idea about pros,cons,good,bad of these careers, they've have no practical experience.
🔸SOLUTIONS - CAREER RESEARCH & EXPERIENCE
🔹kids should be taught to self-educate & research about what their job entails & they should be given options to try doing some parts of it to be reassured they'd be able to do it.
🔸PRACTICE OVER EXPECTED PERFECTION
🔹dr cal new port says you like the job because you get better at it. so it's more than just choosing passion.
🔸chapter : what's mine belongs to I don't know, us : 11m-13m
🔹professor talked about how kids quit school for financial reasons but not just because of that. (12m) they quit because they didn't know where to get money when they can & not be competent enough to know what to do when they get it. so they'd spend it all.
🔸FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
🔹it's odd that school is supposed to prep kids for life & college which is supposed to help people earn. but it just barely makes people literate & earn a living without actually helping people keep that money or grow it.
🔸financial aid: advisors referring kids to a financial aid person at OMA (office of minority affairs & diversity) so kids quality for loans or just financial aid is good as some places don't even have or know about it.
🔸LACK OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION
🔹but it's wild that they don't even teach kids or people who get loans mandatory financial management via case studies of what happens when you mismanage.
🔸TEST TO QUALIFY FOR LOANS
🔹I wish there was a management test with virtual test run & simulation of what they'd do with their money, for people to qualify for loans etc so they'd learn to use it better.
🔸LOGICALLY KNOWING VS EXPERIENCING
🔹ppl know that if you spend the money you have none left lol, but people who get it for the first time will definitely not be able to deal with it. till they actually go through the hardship of losing it.
🔹13m: kids are also not taught about FAFSA (free application of federal student aid) as a default. which his lost opportunities for kids imo.
🔸17m: organizational funds disappearing - discussion about organizational money that was being loaned to kids being collective money for the whole community being untrue when kids misuse the money for themselves & running away with that money being incorrect is true.
🔸20m: STEALING PREVENTION - but the fact that they don't just shame individuals and find better ways to get their loaned money back because one bad can't help other bad & find ways on how to prevent it is pretty good.
🔸training financial management adults
🔹but I wish kids were assigned an adult to teach that & they should submit reciepts as evidence for what they bought.
🔹& only when they were considered competent to deal with money should they be given a slightly freer reign. honestly parents should be doing this too.
🔸 conclusion: transformative schooling against boundaries
🔹27m: it was a good idea to not lump all the Asian Americans together without assimilating different cultures into one as we have things we can learn from each other & keeps the individuality alive. and being able to do this without fighting about it without competitive groupism is cool too.
🔹30m: making school meaningful a place that matters is something all academic places should strive for.
🔹31m: alumnis trying to change the school was so wholesome.
