About this listen
When The Pentagon Papers were first published it caused a political storm. The report showed how the government had lied about the war in Vietnam, and how they were secretly expanding the war.
The government moved to legally block the publishing of the report and charged its author with espionage while government agents also sought to discredit him. A senator attempted to read the report on the Senate floor, and legal manoeuvring was used to bring that to a halt.
The cover-up failed, the report made it into the public domain, and here is an unabridged reading of the first volume.
