Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Ben Barnes, star of the film adaptation of Dorian Gray, also known for his roles in Westworld and The Chronicles of Narnia. This definitive recording includes an introduction by Robert Mighall.

Enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, Dorian Gray exchanges his soul for eternal youth and beauty. Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life; indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence. The novel was a succès de scandale and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895. It has lost none of its power to fascinate and disturb.

Absolutely exquisite

I haven't read anything this brilliant in a long time, I got the audiobook specifically to support Mr. Barnes, however this book is thrilling in ways I hadn't expected. People kept asking if I was reading for a university class, but it had just caught my attention that deeply, that I had to read it. Oscar Wilde was an amazing author and invoked my innermost poet. I didn't want to finish the book, it was that good. I will definitely read it again soon. Truly divine.

Classic

Ben Barnes gives an amazing performance as Dorian Gray. This version also includes an interesting review of the book and the controversy that surrounded it and its author.

An excellent representation of how sin affects everyone

I’ve been wanting to read this book for a long time and now that I finally have I can tell why many people talk about immortality and how one’s personal sins and pride affect the rest of the world as well. Wilde’s novel reveals the how instant gratification hinders one’s ability to truly appreciate the present moment. Dorian’s personal obsession with his beauty leads to his societal and personal estrangement and corruption as the novel progresses. The parallel between beauty and corruption was so well woven throughout that it portrays well that vice, when first encountered, is far more attractive and appealing to others than maintaining virtue.
I may not read this again for a long, long time as it will resonate with me for quite a while, but the lesson in this novel is truly worthwhile.

Great book

It’s sad that Victorians were so caught up about “sins” that most people today would have far more compassion about. Dorian Gray is actually a pretty good guy. His worst crime... well, I won’t give that away. It’s a good book. I enjoyed it. Even though I liked the immoral characters the best.

NOTE TO AUDIBLE: ADVERTISEMENTS AT THE END OF BOOKS RUINS THE EFFECT OF THE ENDING. PLEASE STOP IT.

but needs more translations, less english lit

worth it for the introduction alone (this is not the best version to buy on audible)

penguin classics really needs to put more TRANSLATED classics on audible because penguin classics has superior translations than what's currently available. (not sure why they thought we needed another picture of dorian gray audiobook)

Absaloute banger

I love this book. Opulent imagery, classic story and the way they talk to one another is hilarious to me.

Also, the narrators voice kind of makes me want to bang him.

It's OK. It's just not great

Narrator had a lovely voice, but as a narrator reading parts, it was a bit flat. The story itself was good, but not gripping.. Maybe it was the way it was read.

Definitely Worth Listening To

This is the first Oscar Wilde work I have read (listened to) and I was not disappointed. His use of language and turn of phrase are wonderful.
I knew the basic premise of the story - it is so well known - but to hear/read it in full is something I would recommend to everyone with an interest in human nature.
The narrator did a good job and made this an enjoyable listen. My reason for giving four, rather than five, stars is that there could perhaps have been just a little more distinction between the voicing of the two main characters. Occasionally it wasn't clear which one was speaking.
Overall though I would definitely recommend this.

peaks and troughs

Found this book a bit of a roller coaster, interesting at the start, a bit of a lull in the middle, and then the final 4 chapters were brilliant. Highly recommended but stick with it if you find some of the chapters a little repetitive and dull, its worth it in the end!

compelling story and beautiful narration

I loved to listen to this book after reading it in the Italian translation more then twenty years ago. Ben Barnes was great, to the point that I forgot it was him who was reading.

Boring.

Love the whole concept of Dorian Gray but this audible just bored me. Maybe it was the narrator I don’t know. I had to return it for fear of boredom again.

One of the best books I've listened too!

First time I've read any oscar wilde and it certainly lived up to expectations. Exquisitely written with such rich language and excellently narrated. The narrator does a wonderful rendition.
