But Calla soon learns that even the best intentions can lead to broken promises, and that compromise comes with a hefty price - a log cabin in rural Alaska that feels as isolating as the western tundra.

Story
The first time I met Hudson Rothschild was at a wedding. I’d received an unexpected invitation to one of the swankiest venues in the city. Hudson was a groomsman and quite possibly the most gorgeous man I’d ever laid eyes on. He asked me to dance, and our chemistry was off the charts. I knew it wasn’t a good idea to get involved with him, considering the wedding I was at. But our connection was intense, and I was having a great time. Though the fun came to a screeching halt when Hudson figured out I wasn’t who I’d said I was.

I’m good at hiding my feelings. Having to pretend I’m not in love with my best friend? Pfft. That’s child’s play. Here’s how I do it: I avert my eyes when he walks out of his room, shirtless in all his toned glory. I squash the butterflies that fill my stomach every time he slowly unfurls a dimpled smile. Not to brag, but Aiden Smith isn’t hard to resist if you’ve been doing it for as long as I have. In fact, we might have continued as best friends forever if not for the fact that I needed him to play the part of my fake boyfriend.

Breaking news: The bad boy of baseball, Maddox Paige, is totally and utterly whipped. Okay, that might not be the headline in the newspaper this morning, but it's the reality of my current situation. It all started a month ago when I received a call from my best friend, Kinsley. She’d gotten a new job in Chicago and needed a place to stay. I've known the girl since I was five, so I figured there wouldn't be any harm in having her stay at my place for a while. Ha! Total disaster.

He walked into school on his first day and owned it. I guess that's what happens when you're a prick, rich, and you're best friends with the ruling school's king. Also didn't hurt that he's drop-dead gorgeous. That's all fine. I mean, I have nothing to do with them. I'm a loner, invisible, and that's how I wanted it to be. I was even proud of it, until I wasn't. His name is Blaise Devroe. My name is Aspen Monson. He only knew how to get, command, and demand attention. I knew how to do everything but that. And this is our story.

A writer who's blocked - I'm a total cliche. Lucky for me, my agent has a cure that's an even bigger stereotype - a month at her villa in Tuscany, with nothing to do but find my muse. When he walks right in the front door, adorable son in tow, it feels like fate has finally done for me what it does for every other cliched girl I've seen in the movies. Except that he's completely off-limits. In this case, business and pleasure can never mix. Because Claudio is my agent's ex.

Kat and Yasmine! Do not dally! Come straight home after work. Kat, don’t take the long route from the subway station just so you can pass by Cute Hot Dog Guy. This is important! I’ve had the best day. You won’t believe it. There I was in my preschool classroom, washing a bit of poo out of some soggy trousers, when this absolute babe came to collect his nephew from my class. Truthfully, I thought I’d blacked out for a moment when I first saw him. He was a proper hunk with glorious brown hair, quite tall, and he had these arms. Are muscly arms supposed to turn me on?

But one thing they do have in common is that they're both drawn to sad things. Which means they're drawn to each other. Beyah and Samson agree to stay in the shallow end of a summer fling. What Beyah doesn't realize is that a rip current is coming, and it's about to drag her heart out to sea.

Publisher's Summary
From the international best-selling author of The Simple Wild and Ten Tiny Breaths comes a new second-chance hate-to-love romance.
Scarlet Reed has returned to Polson Falls, convinced that 12 years away is long enough to shed her humiliating childhood identity as the town harlot’s daughter. With a teaching job secured and an adorable fixer-upper to call home, things in her life are finally looking up.
That is, until she finds out that Shane Beckett lives next door.
Shane Beckett, the handsome and charismatic high-school star quarterback who smashed her heart. The lying, cheating player who was supposed to be long gone, living the pro football dream and fooling women into thinking he’s Prince Charming. Shane Beckett, who is as attractive as ever and flashing his dimples at her as if he has done no wrong.
Scarlet makes it abundantly clear that old wounds have not been forgotten. Neighbors they may be, but friends they most certainly are not. She won’t allow herself to fall for the single father and firefighter again, no matter how many apologies he offers, how many times he rushes to her aid, or how hard he makes her heart pound.
But as she spends more time with him, she begins to fear that maybe she’s wrong. Maybe Shane has changed.
And maybe this time she’s the one playing herself - out of a chance at true happiness.

Enjoyable Read
I haven't read many K.A. Tucker books but the ones that I have read have been good. This one is second chance type romance with a mix of enemy to lovers thrown in. Good banter between the story characters with a little bit of the mean girls from the past that goes into the characters adult life. I would recommend if you are looking for this trope.

Loved It ❤️ past reviews did not scare me
Before I go and buy any book I read reviews and a couple reviews weren’t great. That it was hard to get into or the performance wasn’t great, one review said it wasn’t like any of her other stories and was disappointed 🤷🏼♀️ I don’t know what they were talking about but It couldn’t have been further from the truth. This story kept me intrigued and wanting more. It did not disappoint. Now this is the first book I have read of hers and I want to find more and if they aren’t like this one I’m scared to find out how it is but I’m definitely going to find out!

I wish it was a different narrator
So I LOVE K.A. Tucker’s books, I am in the car a long with a long commute so I go for the audio books. I have been waiting for about 6 months for this one to come out. I always enjoy her stories, I find them easy listening and enjoyable.
Now for the performance: I’m really sorry but her lisp is distracting from the story. It gets worse when she is trying to do another characters voice. Also her inflections are off from the story as well and make the characters sound immature and winy when I know if it had been done differently would have come off confident. I think she did another one of KA’s books and it bothered me then to but I didn’t rate it. Most of the other times (like the wild books) the narrator is awesome, or Chasing Rive the girls Irish accent was awesome.

It was ok
I didn’t find the main character very likeable. It was funny and flirty, but I guess I’m just expecting K.A. Tucker from 5 years ago. This was a bit more sexual and shallow than Burying Water. I liked Simply Wild, but other than that I haven’t enjoyed her more recent books lately. There are enough Lauren blakelys etc, so I wish Tucker would keep more to her original style.

Enjoyable Listen
This book was very different from any of the authors other books in my opinion. I guess for me I was just used to the style of writing in her other books. The narrator was ok, she was def not my favorite. That might be the reason for the book was different for me.

Steamy second chance
Love this steamy second chance romance!! It was light, funny and a lot more sexy than you normally get from this author. It has heart, a little drama and lots of laughs!
I really hope a Justine book will come later!
