Story
Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point: really hard, and not much fun at all. And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip: a temporary setback that you will overcome if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

Story
Think of The War of Art as tough love...for yourself. Since 2002, The War of Art has inspired people around the world to defeat "resistance"; to recognize and knock down dream-blocking barriers and to silence the naysayers within us. Resistance kicks everyone's butt, and the desire to defeat it is equally as universal. The War of Art identifies the enemy that every one of us must face, outlines a battle plan to conquer this internal foe, then pinpoints just how to achieve the greatest success.

Story
In his bravest and most challenging book yet, Seth Godin shows how we can thrive in an economy that rewards art, not compliance. He explains why true innovators focus on trust, remarkability, leadership, and stories that spread. And he makes a passionate argument for why you should be treating your work as art. Art is not a gene or a specific talent. It's an attitude, available to anyone who has a vision that others don't, and the guts to do something about it.

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Every marketer tells a story. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche Cayenne is vastly superior to a $36,000 VW Touareg, which is virtually the same car. We believe that $225 Pumas will make our feet feel better, and look cooler, than $20 no-names... and believing it makes it true.

Great Insights

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
From the best-selling author of Purple Cow and This Is Marketing comes an elegant book that will inspire artists, writers and entrepreneurs to stretch and commit to putting their best work out into the world.
Creative work doesn't come with a guarantee. But there is a pattern to who succeeds and who doesn't. And engaging in the consistent practice of its pursuit is the best way forward.
Based on the breakthrough Akimbo workshop pioneered by legendary author Seth Godin, The Practice will help you get unstuck and find the courage to make and share creative work. Godin insists that writer's block is a myth, that consistency is far more important than authenticity and that experiencing the imposter syndrome is a sign that you're a well-adjusted human. Most of all, he shows you what it takes to turn your passion from a private distraction to a productive contribution, the one you've been seeking to share all along.
With this book as your guide, you'll learn to dance with your fear. To take the risks worth taking. And to embrace the empathy required to make work that contributes with authenticity and joy.

Paradigm-shifting. I'd listen to it over and over again. Empowering. Riveting. Validating. It came into my life exactly when I needed it - as I was forced by the pandemic to reinvent myself after my first business was wiped out by the quarantine. Kind of visual
Much as I am intrigued by the ideas the author presents and enjoyed hearing them in his own voice, I think this book is better suited to print, if that is an option for you. The chapter markers don't align with the mini-chapter format, and there is a visual component mentioned in the book's intro that would be good to see this along with the reading. I can go to the author's website but I'd rather just have it in print in front of me. (I wonder if there are ever any visual inclusions with audiobooks? Just a thought there, Audible.)

Seth to the rescue
Seth doesn’t read his reviews but if he did I want him to know that he has made it ok to be imperfect and ship our work anyway. Of course we’ll work at improving and shipping better work but until then, our less than perfect work is ok for now as long as we are working to make things better and our intention is good.
For me that’s a fundamental shift. And a big one but it just feels so right.
This is his best work so far in my opinion.
Don’t read another review, just buy this book, you couldn’t regret it if you read it with an open mind.

Need a mentor? Get The Practice.
I listened to The Practice at a time when I felt disillusioned by the content creation I’ve been doing. Seth Godin’s The Practice was just the tonic and reassurance (even though he advises against seeking reassurance) needed to believe in the work that you do. At its core, Seth’s message is to adopt a way of being and doing called the practice. The practice is a process that we enjoy then we publish to others to bring about a change. It’s not about the outcome; that’s a by-product of the practice and not a pre-cursor.
If you’re someone who feels a little lost or without support in your creative pursuits, then Godin’s words will serve as guidance. If you’re someone who is result driven, then this might be hard to hear for you. But it could also be just thing thing you need.
Seth repeats his cores messages through the book. He’s constructed it using numbered points inside a few sections. He offers many examples and imagery to consolidate his views. A great listen with many takeaways that you can adopt and live by.

Fantastic, Inspiring book for all Creatives!
Very well written text that obliterates avoidance, inspiring the reader to take small achievable steps toward creative dreams. A reminder that achievement comes through disciplined practice. I recommend this for anyone who is feeling stalled with art, stuck in resistance. It dismantles unhelpful mindsets, and replaces with ways of thinking that help the creator know that it is possible to trust in their vision. "The Practice" has reminded me of why I engage with art, aiding me to get through the tricky parts, participating in the process even when the Muse is not present. Inspiration comes through The Practice.
