'The women in this family, we're different....'

Blythe Connor doesn't want history to repeat itself.

Violet is her first child and she will give her daughter all the love she deserves. All the love that her own mother withheld.

But firstborns are never easy. And Violet is demanding and fretful. She never smiles. Soon Blythe believes she can do no right - that something's very wrong. Either with her daughter, or herself.

Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining it. But Violet's different with him. And he can't understand what Blythe suffered as a child. No one can.

Blythe wants to be a good mother. But what if that's not enough for Violet? Or her marriage? What if she can't see the darkness coming?

Mother and daughter. Angel or monster?

We don't get to choose our inheritance - or who we are....

The Push is an addictive, gripping and compulsive listen that asks what happens when women are not believed - and what if motherhood isn't everything you hoped for but everything you always feared?

Chilling!

A mother's worst nightmare.
Marine Ireland's narration as expected is top notch.
The story doesn't really hold the same grip towards the third act but that could be my mistaken expectation. nevertheless a mind-boggling listen.

A very different novel!

It really a one of kind with regard to the way its been written. The entire story written from Blythe's perspective. I enjoyed the book more as an audio version.

I was hooked..what a performance and story

This book is one of those which I found through research, no one told me to read it..but I'm just so glad I found this book. The best part of the story is the writing, it makes the story almost visual. What a narrator. Just incredible . I am extremely impressed and I couldn't stop thinking about it throughout the time I was reading it. it leaves a mark. It has given me an experience..so many moments when I had goosebumps. Incredible writer.. incredible perfomance by the narrator.. They felt like the same to me. A must read ! I don't have enough words to describe my experience reading it. Loved it thoroughly!

Soooo good!

As a mother, I totally get how hard parenting is. the way the book was portrayed was so interesting and I absolutely loved how it developed and how it shows the way you end up missing things right before your eyes. It was so well written, like a beautiful puzzle, with all the pieces coming together at the end. Soooo good and highly recommended.

Superior in every way beautifully written

This book blew me away it is extraordinary, one of those books that stays with and haunts the listener. It is essentially a story of motherhood told in flashbacks over three generations of women. It questions nature v nurture and the ability to love passed on mother to child. The three women's stories are so similar placed in different generations with different social constructs, it questions the belief that you automatically love the child you give birth to. Blythe the most recent mother struggles with loving her first child Violet, is she even loveable or is Blythe's past impinging on her ability to give Violet love? Could the tragedy that occurs have been avoided and that is central to Blythe's character throughout the second half of the book. The writer so beautifully captures each women's torment, this book is so well written the dialogue sparse and totally relevant no frills. It was one of those books I wanted to listen to in one sitting and then felt bereaved when it was finished. The narrator was superb and I just cannot fault this wonderful book.

Made me think

This is one of those books that leaves its mark. I had to sit back for a while after closing it.
I was hooked immediately. I loved the protagonist - really felt for her and went with her.
Was slightly confusing on audiobook when went back in time - sometimes took a while to realise. Also ‘you’ was used to mean different people which was also hard to follow.
I loved this book though it’s not the sort of book you can say you loved easily. Well written and poignant. I don’t often write a full review - says a lot.

Brutally honest. About a mother's instincts entwined with her doubts. This is a very powerful read / listen. Highly recommended.

Disappointing

l was looking forward to listening to The Push but personally found it slow, overly indulgent and crushingly dull with endless introspection that seemed beyond the scope of the actual main character l understand that the format was a letter to Blythe's husband but found myself wishing that she would just 'get over herself ' ... Granted it's a new way to rehash a fairly tired story but helped by the soporific tones of the narrator I fell asleep while listening and reluctantly gave up just before halfway

Good storyline

Great story….. however the constant bavk and forth of timelines and how it’s narrated was sometimes difficult to ascertain who the story was about.
Once a few chapters have gone by it’s when you get the rhythm of the story.
Otherwise good story line

So raw and so sad

This left me feeling so much quiet pain and weirdly also validated my feelings as a mother. It was almost too much. I couldn’t stop listening so whizzed through it very quickly. I’ll definitely be looking for more from Ashley Audrain in future.

Addictive but exceptionally dark

Blythe, whose own mother was neglectful at best, wants to be a wonderful wife and mother, the mother she didn't have. But there's something unknowable about her firstborn daughter Violet, who loves her father but never warms to her mother. Incident after incident, she grows concerned that there is something wrong with her daughter, something dangerous. Her husband refuses to see the problems and sees only fault in her. A second child, an unspeakable tragedy later, and we mostly spend time in the intimate self doubt of a woman who nobody believes about a danger she helped to create, wishing for everyone's sake someone would believe her.

I don't think I could ever read this again, as a mother and as a daughter of traumatized generations of women it really hot a raw nerve. I finished it in a couple of days, finding it quite impossible to walk away from, even though I was raw the whole time.

It's a well written book, Audrain has a talent for capturing moments with evocative language, for making those mundane things ring true. I'm surprised it's her first, she carries a skill that a lot of more experienced authors don't have. I expect of she keeps writing she'll do great things.

I will say that this isn't for the faint hearted. of you're not in a great place with your own experiences with motherhood, shelf it for another time. It's worth reading but approach with caution, because it's going to hurt.

Definitely worth a read.

I loved this book, although feel weird saying that as it’s such a dark book. It’s definitely captivating, with plenty of twists and turns. I couldn’t wait to know what would happen next. Loved all the characters and the narration.

It goes against every mothering instinct.

I’m devastated for Blythe, such a sad and heart twisting story. An evil child? Maybe… wouldn’t you question your own sanity? I need therapy after that!

Powerful psychological thriller

An emotional and captivating read, all the way to the end. The narration was spot on and perfect for this particular story. Some good psychological twists to really make you question the power of nature vs. nurture? Can we we born evil? Or are we born into evil. Wish I could keep listening.

A Riveting read!

This was beautifully written. The characters came alive from the first moment and I was struck by the feelings and thoughts it provoked in me. This is a disturbing read but highly recommended - I enjoyed every word! The narrator brought so much realness to the characters. I wish the writer has written more in English!
