All year his mother has been calling. All year, a machine has answered for him: Please say your name and the reason for your call.Casimir Halloran is twenty-four, the ninth-best cold caller on a floor of a hundred and twenty outside Chicago, the same floor where his father spent twenty years. He has a wife who believes he is worth more than he is, two small daughters, a car he is three months behind on, and a phone full of numbers he has learned not to answer. One of them is his mother's.At night, at the kitchen table, he is building something: a machine that can tell, in the first second, whether a living person has picked up. It works. It spreads from his desk across the floor. And the company upstairs starts asking what it would take for him to give it up.Between the floor and the kitchen, between the father who never says anything and the mother who never stops calling, Caz has one year to decide what he owes the people on the other end of the line, and whether he is going to pick up.Sharp, intimate, and quietly devastating, The Reason for Your Call is a novel about work and family, fathers and sons, the voices we screen out, and what remains when the one we have been avoiding calls back.A novel inspired by a true story.©2026 Anthony Hubka (P)2026 Anthony Hubka Biographical Fiction Genre Fiction Literary Fiction Psychological
