The story follows Hyeon, a palace nurse, as she tries to unravel the mystery behind a series of murders. Hyeon along with police inspector Eojin races against time to save her mentor who has been falsely accused. The highlight of the story is the inner turmoil of the characters. It follows the emotions of honour and parental acceptance. Hyeon is the daughter of a concubine and in a society that holds fast to social structure, her struggle to rise to respectability is showcased very well.

The story is set in 18th century Joseon era and draws inspiration from the real life story of Crown Prince Sado. A truly tragic prince who will remain as one of the most misunderstood and controversial princes of the Joseon era. I liked the insights the author gave into the nursing and medical profession during the time.

June Hur is turning into my favourite YA author. I stumbled upon her book, The Silence of Bones last year and she absolutely blew me away with the story. She surpassed my expectations with The Red Palace. Definitely an author on my must read list.
