Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a remote Irish village would be the perfect escape. After twenty-five years in the Chicago police force, and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens.

But then a local kid comes looking for his help. His brother has gone missing, and no one, least of all the police, seems to care. Cal wants nothing to do with any kind of investigation, but somehow he can't make himself walk away.

Soon Cal will discover that even in the most idyllic small town, secrets lie hidden, people aren't always what they seem, and trouble can come calling at his door.

Our greatest living mystery writer weaves a masterful tale of breath-taking beauty and suspense, asking what we sacrifice in our search for truth and justice, and the dangers of finding what we seek.

Critic Reviews

This is a tour de force of suspense and storytelling. Comes closer to perfection than anything I've read in the last decade (SARAH HILARY)
French offers a masterclass in unreliability
A story of redemption and friendship, love and betrayal, it is a work of great strength and beauty

The story unfolds very slow..the narrator was good with absolutely the perfect voice for a story like this...it's about a retired police detective striking an unlikely relationship and helping a small kid

A little slow

I listened to the whole book in 2 sessions.
the voice performance was great.
The story was nothing extraordinary,I could see the twist coming but stuck around till the end because of the relationship between Cal and Trey.
The best part is the main characters.

This was a great listen.

Just like other books by Tana French, this too was character driven and the crime has is based in the realities of a small town.

Tana French is in a league of her own.

The last few days, I've spent all the time that I could manage (while dog walking, doing household chores, reading before bed, and sometimes, even skipping more important work) on this audiobook because it had me completely hooked. Tana French is the queen of literary thrillers and she is becoming better with every book. The narration by Roger Clark is a treat and it perfectly suits the story. One tiny disappointment was the ending which I'd expected to be a bit more exciting but then again, the overall experience was absolutely worth it. Highly recommend this listen to lovers of slow burn literary thrillers.

Gorgeous literary thriller brilliantly narrated
