An unlikely pair on a collision course with trouble.

Bounty Hunter John Smoke never liked the rules. As a result of his overly aggressive - and often illegal - arrest methods, he ended up behind bars. But the Bureau wont’ let him be. Placed in the able care of beautiful, no nonsense, Sidney Shaw, his new FBI handler, Smoke needs to alter his loose-cannon ways to remain a free man.

But there is an unchecked evil festering deep in the heart of the nation’s capital. A shadow conspiracy than won’t be defeated by conventional means. A vast, hidden network of criminals with the terrifying ability to shapeshift into monsters is spreading its supernatural sickness in the very fabric of human society.

No ordinary mortal can fight the evil. But, there is nothing ordinary about John Smoke. Sidney Shaw is about to discover for herself as she follows Smoke’s trail into the darkest, most secret corners of Washington, DC. Smoke and Sidney must fight the evil that will stop at nothing to tear them apart while destroying a nation as well.

Good plot line, however writing was childish

I really struggled with this story. I liked the premise of the story as I think the plot was good, which is the only reason I persevered to listen to all 10 books as I felt the actual writing and character development were childish. Perhaps if if the plot line had been given to another writer they might have done a better job.
Listening to the first chapters was the hardest when it seemed a 14yr old boy had attempted to write a female character and what he thinks the inner workings of a woman's thoughts are.
The constant immaturity of Sydney desiring Smoke but outwardly treating him as though he had cooties was draining.
Once Sydney and Smoke actually got together, it was like a different character had stepped in and started to make more jokes, movie references and lewd comments.
The performance of the narrator was good, character voices were clearly defined, however the 'sound effects' were tiresome and comicbook like.
Every gunshot was 'blam blam' or 'budah budah', I'm surprised we didn't hear others like 'pow', 'bam', 'smack' every time there was a fight scene.
I don't know if the effects were written in the actual book for if the narrator took creative license but it was distracting and annoying.
Throughout the story I yelled at my car speakers more than once at the ridiculousness of some situations.
If your looking for a listen which is not meant to be taken seriously at all and will frustrate you, then this is the book for you!

I kept trying - i wanted to like this

I really wanted to like this book. But I kept getting bored and the very slow pace of the narration - not every word requires a drawn slow pronounciation. Might be better if I sped up the pace.. but after 6 hours .. i just didn't care much anymore. I am sorry - because the first book was ok - the second just could not hold me.

Reads like a romance novel half the time

Not terrible, but if you want something with depth or don't enjoy sitcom level dialogue, look elsewhere.

Fight The Good Fight!

OK. I'll make this simple. And trust me. it is simple. To sum it up- Smoke is John Wick, but add some charm and charisma. Sidney Shaw is as stiff as a log whose laser eyes will bore you through if you cross her...which also has a HUG trust issue (yet can't trust herself in trusting a handsome convict who's appetite comes with pancakes and milk shakes). Take those two, and throw them in a blend of the X-Files, two bounty hunters, and the Black List. And what do you have? PURE. AWESOMENESS!

Holly Adams. Well, I tell ya. You don't come by that many awesome narrators who will throw in Awesome voices, Engrosses you in not only the book, but you LIVE the character. Hands down. Awesome job Holly!

Also, there is a bit of strong swearing.

Other than that, better hope that you have extra PTO cause you may, in fact, become a deader...so beware!

Not a dull moment!

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. I must admit that I fail to give many reviews because I am too excited to start my next book most of the time. That being said, I had to let everyone know how worthwhile I found this credit was spent. I am honestly bummed to be finished with the entire collection. What an adventure!

Those sound effects

I actually really like the story, but WTF with the sound effects. Like pop pop pop, and blap blap blap ever 4 seconds. It's really annoying and took away from the awesomeness that was the rest of story and performance.

DNF

DNF after 2 hours.

The dialogue is so campy and unnatural. I kept expecting something supernatural to happen but it never did. Just really cringe worthy dialogue. The acting makes the characters seem even more unnatural than the words. At first I was torn between continuing or not because it's 48+ hours for 1 credit, but then I asked myself, "Do I really want to listen to 46 more hours of this?" The answer was heck no.

Need something to listen to while working?

I'll admit that I am mid-way through book 2, but at the moment I'm rating this as "ok." The main character lacks a lot of reasons to like her in my opinion and Smoke, while charismatic, is attempting to be Raymond Reddington on The Blacklist, but not quite succeeding. I'll continue to listen when I need something to fill my time and some background audio, but I couldn't find the storyline or characters compelling enough to make this a must listen.

I received this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

Hang in there it gets better!

OK Im just in book 3 so praying this gets better, but I honestly want to SMACK Sidney, the main character, already. She is an immature b$tch to Smoke, her "partner" in all things "Black Slate", the assignments they get regarding the supernatural. He's saved her life multiple times already, her internal dialogue tells us she likes him, and yet she talks to him in one word clipped aggravated answers EVERY time she speaks to him - actually anytime she speaks to ANYONE else, except her niece. It could be the narrator's take on SIdney, but Im not so sure. The narrator, Holly Adams, is good, "voices" are very distinct, but "Sidney's" voice is slilted and annoying when compared to other characters' voices, AND the base narration (which is Sidney's POV) itself. I really want to like this series, but maaaaaan I dont know.
**UPDATE** Ok it switched to Smoke's perspective in like book 3, 4 I cant remember and everything changed. Narration became much more smooth and Sidney became a little less snippy. Its worth the listen. I got to the point where I was listening while driving, at the store, cooking dinner etc so Id say it kept me engaged afterall :)

Good series

I enjoyed this box set. Great action and story.

Plots riveting. Worth getting. At times you love the characters. At times not so much. That’s great when the characters are consistent which I’m happy to say they are. Grab this it’s worth it.

Finally a little note on the narration. Kerpow and dadadadadada for gunshots only makes this book series better. Well done Holly Adams.

Shifters and the FBI...omg!

So I bought this as the storyline intrigued me...but guess what?...it turned out to be fantastic!

I love the energy, partnership, and romance between Syd and Smoke and the members of the team that come to the rescue.
The unexpected fantasy of numerous shifters, monsters, and the FBI made it not just interesting, but also different from anything I've read/heard before.

Of course, the narration was fantastically done and made the world believable and convincing, so well done to both the author and narrators for a job done well.....I certainly will look out for the next boxsets (have to point out the ending that is usually read by audible, but done by the narrators was smart and made me not just smile, but everything as a whole a great boxset that I recommend to all lovers of this genre. ...thumbs up all around!!!!

ruined by comic book sound effects

would have marked this higher but for the sound effects. I dont need an out loud kerpow when someone is hit. or a noise to imitate gunfire.
I have enough imagination to think a burst of gunfire or a loud explosion. however the author wrote it and as such the actor had to kerblam, kerpow and thwack at irregular intervals through the books.
sadly it is both annoying and off putting.
fortunately the author grew out of this tendency 30hrs into the book up until the end.
otherwise I got it cheap so I'm prepared to live with the annoyance.

Gripping and annoying the perfect books

When a book gets you laughing and annoyed at a character and wanting to keep on its a successful book. The character of smoke and Sydney make you laugh, the annoying Kane makes your blood boil and the other quirky characters add to the delightful mix. Asia is a favourite a food hungry attitude, thank you for getting me through a firebreak and a vat return.

good but over the top

this series was okay. the narrator does a good job with different voices for each character but i started loosing interest after 25hrs or so. it got to predictable and over the top for me. still finished the series but was really looking forward to another book which is not my normal as i normally wish the book would never end.

Gripping

This series is well developed a tad drawn out in places and took a while to get going, particularly in the beginning but in the latter books finally got some steam in the storyline.
I recommend this book to those that like fantasy and to persevere as the end is worth the wait

loved it

loved the ups and downs all the way through. Could have done with a little more romance but I enjoyed how it ended up. Also characterisation from the narrator was awesome she is great at accents.
