It was first published in The Strand Magazine in the UK in June 1904 and in Collier's in the US on September 24, 1904. The story follows Holmes as he investigates the mysterious disturbance of exam papers at St Luke's College, prompted by unusual clues found by the college tutor Hilton Soames.
