Critic Reviews
"Blum's spare imagery is nightmarish and intimate, imbuing familiar panoramas of Nazi atrocity with stark new power. This is a poised, hair-raising debut." ( Publishers Weekly)
"An absorbing tale of two women's struggles with the burdens and responsibilities of remembrance." ( The Boston Globe)

German Anna (Anshel) Schlemmer and Jew Dr.Maximillian Stern fell in love with each other, thereby, doing honour to human nature. It was annoying, confoundedly annoying that the SS were pushing their inquiries in every direction, likely or unlikely. They kept the Jews in custody as if they were rogues, vagabonds, or kidnappers.
Anna was gentle with those who were less lucky, if not more deserving. She was anxious to throw anyone who might be watching her off the scent. The kind object with which she undertook the task was a full justification of it, but she had been matching herself against an unscrupulous villain (the obersturmführer), who, had he detected the truth, would have practically hesitated at nothing to rid himself of her. It was wrong for a woman to remain with a man who dishonoured her. Yet, she kept him mollified. It was quite evident that she must be extremely careful.
It is the little things that gall us all...
