Un famoso pittore in cerca di pace e solitudine sceglie di ritirarsi nell'Eremo di Zafer per poi scoprire essere stato trasformato, dall'enigmatico Don Gaetano, in un hotel esclusivo che ospita ritiri spirituali per i potenti.
Ed è proprio durante un ritiro cui prende parte anche il pittore, precisamente al momento in cui gli ospiti compatti recitano il rosario, che avviene l'omicidio dell'ex senatore Michelozzi. Il procuratore Scalambri, supportato dal pittore cerca di risolvere il caso ma non ne viene a capo. L'hotel viene così sgomberato senza che nessuno venga accusato dell'omicidio.
