Margherita Malventi si dedica a una cucina intima e riflessiva nel suo piccolo ristorante a Venezia, nel sestiere di Castello, ed è convinta che la luna le abbia salvato la vita più di una volta. Suo padre si chiama Achille, ha ottantasette anni, è alto un metro e cinquantaquattro, ed è stato uno dei più rinomati chef della città lagunare, finché non ha perso tutto a causa delle sue manie di grandezza.

È un uomo rabbioso, in guerra contro il mondo, ma l'invito a partecipare come ospite d'onore a Chef Test, popolarissimo programma televisivo di cucina, sembra offrirgli la possibilità di una rivalsa pubblica. Margherita decide di accompagnarlo a Milano, dove il programma viene registrato, con la speranza assai poco realistica che il viaggio possa dischiudere tra loro una comunicazione che non c'è mai stata.
