Die niederbayerische Provinz in den Achtzigern: In Artlhofen tobt der Kulturkampf zwischen Kirche, CSU und der Anti-Atombewegung. Mittendrin der 18-jährige Oberministrant Vinzenz Bachmaier, der endlich auch einmal cool sein möchte. Aber statt zur Demo nach Wackersdorf muss er zur Wallfahrt nach Altötting mitfahren. So wird das nichts mit seiner Ricarda und der Karriere als Rockgitarrist.

Als er schließlich mit seiner Band aus der katholischen Enge ausbricht und das Glück greifbar nah scheint, nimmt sein Leben eine tragische Wendung. Vinzenz ist plötzlich ganz auf sich und seinen kauzigen Freund Kowalczyk gestellt – und auf seinen trotzigen Lebenswillen.
