1977: Das Zuhause der vierzehnjährigen Christine ist das ehemals mondäne Hotel Waldeshöh am Rennsteig im Thüringer Wald. Seit der Teilung Deutschlands liegt es hinter Stacheldraht in der Sperrzone direkt an der Grenze. Schon lange findet kein Wanderer mehr den Weg dorthin. Ohne Passierschein darf niemand das Waldstück betreten, irgendwann fahren weder Postauto noch Krankenwagen mehr dort hinauf. Fast scheint es, als habe die DDR das Hotel und seine Bewohner vergessen.

2017: Die junge Milla findet abseits der Wanderwege im Thüringer Wald einen überwucherten Keller und stößt auf die Geschichte des Hotels Waldeshöh. Dieser besondere Ort lässt sie nicht los, sie spürt Christine auf, um mehr zu erfahren. Die Begegnung verändert beide Frauen: Während die eine lernt, Erinnerungen anzunehmen, findet die andere Trost im Loslassen.
