The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. Story
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Nearly same plot as Angel Falls
What would have made Whiskey Beach better?
If all her plots were more researched. Feels like she is getting lazy as she's using nearly exactly the same formula and recycling plot lines of many of her books. I really used to like her, but please, oh please... never use the quote "Dumb as a box of hair" again. She has used this eloquent quote in several books now. There are many more insulting comments she could use, trust me, I'm a teacher.
What was most disappointing about Nora Roberts’s story?
Feels like she is recycling plot lines. Its all sounding the same. Literally, all female characters have a difficult past, overcoming a current insecurity, happen to be thin and beautiful, horribly opinionated and quite stupid. The guys all happen to be good, stand up men who are going through personal crisis and usually both charachters 'take the law into theie own hands' as they forgo common sense and 'risk it all' for love. All that changes is charachter name, career, a few personal details and location. Otherwise, its a fill in the blank template.
What aspect of Luke Daniels’s performance would you have changed?
He's not so bad, but a woman for a womans voice would be nice. But its just obvious hes trying his best, but, even he sounded bored in some parts of the script.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Whiskey Beach?
I would eliminate innane comments, which make up half the book. They are stumbling blocks over the stoeyline and what makes the story sound repetitive. I like the old man at the bar, it was a nice character who had just enough 'screen time' to make a scene interesting, provide key information, gave meat to the story, and mentioned in passing before disappearing. The rest of charachters are waaaay to chatty and overthink a situation.
Any additional comments?
Nora does have a way with words, she can make a descriptive scene but bogged down by her past plot lines. Can you get a woman who is in her forties, a little soft, tired and has a intersting backstory but is revitalized by love, personal transformation, not trying to solve a puzzle but gets swept up in getting involved with life, finds new goal, happiness in achieving and finding the guy? Her target audience is getting older, and kinda tired of reading about mid twenties love stories. Life gets more complicated and interesting after forty anyways.

Not So Good
This was not an enjoyable experience for me. I don't normally complain about a book being too long but this one sags and drags. I did not bond with the characters or the improbable plot. There was no suspense for me. Very repetitive and farfetched. The narration was okay, it was the story that disappointed.

One big yawn
The storyline in Whiskey Beach would have fit perfectly into a short story format. It was frustrating to stop knitting and fast forward through the tedious parts, of which there were many. I listen to Nora Roberts when I'm in need of some light entertainment. This was a tedious slog through nothingness. No more Nora Roberts for me.
In my view, the narration was fine. It's hard to do much with a dull storyline.

Same stuff, different day
Her books are becoming rewrites of previous books. I remember other books with lost treasures to only be found by love. The ideas in the book are copies of other books. Change the characters and a few other things. The narrator was boring as well. I used to love Nora Roberts books, and JD Robb, but she has dried up and it's not cutting it for me anymore. I will wait for reviews on future work before purchasing it, hate to waste my money.

Not all that well written.
What disappointed you about Whiskey Beach?
Basically it's unbelievable. Roberts must have had a great massage and thought describing it was enough. Characters not interesting.
Has Whiskey Beach turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
Have you listened to any of Peter Berkrot’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but narration was Ok . You can't do much with a boring book
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment

Unsuitable narrator unfortunately
What did you like best about Whiskey Beach? What did you like least?
Nora Roberts writes great books so a no star review will not affect her in the least, but the narrator was unsuitable for this story as his 'female' voice sounded ridiculous. Why did he have to resort to a simpering man to get the heroine's dialogue across!?
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
DNF
Would you be willing to try another one of Luke Daniels’s performances?
No
If this book were a film would you go see it?
Yes, probably.
Any additional comments?
Will be more careful when ordering audio books!

Second recording so much better
Revisited this since it's been recorded again with a new narrator....and it's a completely different listening experience. Luke Daniels gives the characters' life and personality, which was lacking in the first narration, and makes it incredibly easy to care about and empathize with them. You know immediately who's talking, each character has a distinct voice, brilliantly done. The story took on a different perspective with much more depth and was like a first listen. Loved it this time round.

Does not disappoint
If you could sum up Whiskey Beach in three words, what would they be?
Enjoyable, interesting, worthwhile
Who was your favorite character and why?
Eli as the main character. It was great 'seeing' his journey back to health.
Have you listened to any of Luke Daniels’s other performances? How does this one compare?
No but would be prepared to.do.so. His female accents do come across as a little camp but not annoying
Any additional comments?
Read the paperback so knew the story but thoroughly enjoyed the audio version.

A romantic thriller
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Many many wonderful scenes impossible to pick a favourite.
Any additional comments?
This is the 1st book I've read by Nora Roberts, but it won't be the last. The characters were brilliantly written by her and portrayed by the narrator. They were people you began to care about, wanting things to go well for them and whilst the story was fairly predictable it was told well and kept me listening, not wanting it to end.

Not up to her usual standard
What disappointed you about Whiskey Beach?
I am a big fan of Nora Roberts, and when she makes an effort her standalone romances are often her best work - The Witness was great - but this has a knocked off feel to it. Boring plot, and the lead female character was AWFUL. So smug and annoying, even worse than Mia Devlin in Face the Fire. Eli really should not have let her get away with dictating to him so much and "knowing better" than him constantly. I feel very sorry for him if he's stuck with her ever after.
Has Whiskey Beach put you off other books in this genre?
Nope. Nora is very variable, so you take pot luck. She can write extremely well, but she doesn't always bother to.
What character would you cut from Whiskey Beach?
Abra!

Not the best Nora ....
I have been a fan of Nora Roberts for some time but this book I found long winded and predictable. The main characters were annoying, Abra was just too unbelivable and too flowery with too many fingers in too many pies, and those post its... dont get me started on those. Although the narrator was clear and concise I found his female voices to be a little masculine. The detective in charge, Wolf, was just mean. I love audible books and this one will not stop me from being a Nora fan and would love to hear this narrator with a different author and style of book.
