Never Forgive and Never Forget. Hunted as witches during the Salem Trials and haunted by their past sins, the Crowhart women carry a deep secret and an inescapable curse.
Rhiannon Crowhart, the renegade second sister of the notorious family, returns to the sleepy town of Crow's Nest in a flurry of storms and scandal. Her homecoming is not hospitable, as the townspeople and her own sisters are keen to hold onto old grudges. Not that Rhiannon requires their welcome. After all, she hated everything about the island, the town, and the old Atelier she recently inherited.
Everything except a pair of gray eyes that look at her from the bookstore next door. Eyes that belong to the Mayor's daughter. Eyes that Rhiannon keeps seeing in her dreams.
Prudence Fowler has never seen a more fascinating woman than the one who glides around town in four-inch heeled boots carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. Rhiannon Crowhart is as beautiful as she is troubled. And, above all, Rhiannon Crowhart is dangerous.
When their connection upends both their lives, Prudence needs to choose between family loyalty and loving the woman who is Wind herself.
Contains mature themes.
©2025 Milena McKayWindburn, as always, is beautifully written. It took me a little while to settle into the story, but once I did, I was completely invested. I enjoyed how Rhiannon and Prudence’s story began, and I liked seeing their relationship develop. The initial intimate scenes were beautifully written, and I appreciated the way the story unfolded.
However, the reason I’m giving this book 4 stars instead of the usual 5 (which is my typical rating for McKay’s books because they’re consistently excellent) is that I was a little disappointed with how Rhiannon and Prudence’s relationship progressed. Their connection started off with the idea of a slow-burn, but then it felt as though they suddenly got together and developed deep feelings without enough emotional build-up. One of the things Milena McKay excels at is creating incredible chemistry and writing unforgettable slow-burn romances. She is truly the queen of slow burn, and this time, I felt that element was missing.
Another aspect that left me unsatisfied was the suspense surrounding the photograph and the note sent to Rhiannon. The story built it up as a significant mystery, creating genuine tension, only for it to be quickly dismissed with the explanation that it was Lisa. It felt anticlimactic. If any amount of suspense was going to be created around it, I would have preferred seeing the mystery properly investigated and resolved rather than brushed aside.
I was also hoping for a more satisfying conclusion to Rhiannon and Prudence’s love story. Their confession of love felt surprisingly brief, and I would have loved an epilogue showing Rhiannon’s healing journey and how she gradually learned to receive the love and stability she deserved after everything she had gone through.
Overall, Windburn is good read, and I enjoyed reading it. That said, I do think Milena McKay has written stronger novels in the past. I shall always be a fan of her writing, and I am already looking forward to reading her future books.
A good read.
