Publisher's Summary
Wuthering Heights is a ghost story with the atmosphere of ancient tragedy. An epic poem in prose, it is widely considered to be one of the greatest English novels. The book was published in 1848 and did not meet with approval at first because of its bleak descriptions of physical and mental cruelty. Essentially, it is a tale of revenge set in the North Yorkshire moorlands.
Ever since its publication, the novel has eluded classification, and its characters and plot have fascinated and bewildered readers for over 150 years. The title is suitable, as "wuthering" is a provincial term used to describe a tumultuous, stormy atmosphere. The English language has rarely been utilized as well as it has here, and you would need to go back to Shakespeare to find its parallel. Romanticism reached its high water mark with this novel.
